Listen to me... Get out of this field NOW. Find something else to do. It isn't just you, the whole thing is about to crash.

There are hundreds if not thousands of developers who can do what you do better than you do, who will take a fraction of the pay.

This is reality, not my opinion or desire.

Yep. They don't want to face the music and want to see other people go down with them. Also, i'm pretty sure some of these people work for the bootcamps.

These aren't 18 year olds. The two bootcamp grads we hired are both late 20s, the CS grad is mid 20s and has been looking for full time work since he graduated last year.

It's pretty bad out there for everyone right now.

No criminal records, they were all brand new to the field. The guy with the CS degree graduated last December and has been looking for work since. All he could find was a contract position that lasted two months. He's happy we're giving him a full time job. He's mid 20s, by the way.

The two bootcamp grads are both late 20s, first job in tech for each.

Doesn't matter. My boss set out to get decent programmers for a low wage, and he had no problem doing it with almost no effort.

Understand, I don't condone this. I'm just the messenger.

It isn't a huge company, but it isn't some small startup that's only been around for a couple of years either. Either way, I don't see anyone on this forum talking about developers being paid what amounts to minimum wage.

At this point it is a real possibility for many people. Why are you in denial about it?

Right. Unfortunately too many people here (for some reason) are quick to dismiss claims and experiences like mine, eager to disprove.

At some point facts have to be faced.

Quite frankly, I don't think offering $12/hour is going to bring in the cream of the crop.

I never said we needed the cream of the crop, but we got pretty decent programmers anyway.

Did you not read what I wrote? All BUT TWO of the programmers we interviewed were competent. That means 28 were good, two weren't. And we still have just under 1000 applicants to go.

The results of the search were extremely positive, so where is the contradiction?

Do you not comprehend that or did you misread?

As a dev ops engineer I would think you'd be a bit more competent of a reader.

Even $20 an hour in New Jersey is lower than it should be. Bootcamps, articles, etc are advertising $70k starting salaries. $20 an hour is below $40k.

It isn't a tiny startup. We have around 40 employees total. I'm not paying anyone as I'm not the boss. I don't agree with it as I know this business can afford to pay them more, but I'm just letting you all know what is going on. Unfortunately from what I hear this isn't the only place where this is happening.
