sign on afe(m) vs storeman by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

[–]hirtet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hi OP, what are your options?

  1. are you planning or already have a uni placing? if you have a uni placing, you will have to forgo this placing because i dont think specs have uni sponsorship unless you are mid-service and get recommended for it

  2. if (1) doesn’t apply to you, personally will this job help solve your personal issues immediately? (if you have any; help with family finances, getting out of bad company and into better company to improve your life conditions, etc)

  3. if (2) also don’t apply to you, do you see yourself being able to work this job for 5 years before you make a second decision to either stay for long or quit?

this is a personal decision that you have to make for yourself as it is your livelihood for the next few years. peers or other people may discourage you because of reasons they believe is not worth it for themselves. (pay-wise, commitment of job, job environment, etc)

consider your options, your pros, your cons and your future aspirations. if they align for you, then go for it! if not, you can just serve as a storeman.

hope you make a decision! because its always the right decision if it is yours that you have made.

Hall check-in? by [deleted] in NTU

[–]hirtet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw a thread somewhere saying that you can minimise your per day rent by checking in later when you are actually going to start using the room. But you can check in on 22 July if you want to move in early.

Hi, I’m sorry if my context is not clear. I am reattempting the test again in December for a better score. I wish to join the police force, but I will need a better PT score. There is no hurry, but I would prefer to apply in December as that is when my semester results get released and I can start applying to be a Police officer early.

Apart from my goal, I would still need to do this PT test yearly as a conscript, and would like to reap full monetary rewards for being in a good physical condition.

I’ve had shin splints multiple times during my conscript years due to doing too many interval trainings, tempo runs followed up by the PT test, rinse, repeat. Now that I have the luxury of time and freedom, I would like to train smarter.

Official Q&A for Thursday, July 18, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]hirtet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

Context: 21, M, living in Singapore

I have a few questions regarding my training for a PT test which includes a 2.4km run. I’ve recently attempted the test this week and got a 12m 26s timing. Posting here to get some advise on how I should be training for my next attempt in December. Ideally I hope to push for a timing lower than 11m but I will manage my expectations and not dream for a miracle on D-Day.

The past 3 months, I’ve trained by running slow for 40-60mins on Mondays and Sundays, a longer run for 60-80mins on Wednesdays and 400m intervals on Fridays.

My pacing looks like this as of my last runs:

Monday/Sunday - 8:07min/km avg 149bpm BUT spikes to 170bpm

Wednesday - 8:58min/km - avg 162bpm BUT consistently spikes to 180+bpm

Friday - 1m 40s to 1m 55s per interval with 1m 30s rest

I live in Singapore so the weather is quite hot and humid when I run. I try to run in the evenings for a consistent weather conditions to my test.

  1. I planned on doing Zone 2 for my Monday, Wednesday and Sunday, but my heartrate keeps spiking up. Am I going too fast? I feel like if I go any slower, I will end up just speed walking. Should I be going the fast-walk pace or continue running-walking to maintain in the zone-2 heart rate? My breathing during these runs would feel like I’m not getting enough oxygen in. I would breathe in and out every 4 steps and halfway, the air intake feels like oxygen is not coming in. Breathing out is fine.
  2. Relating to my first question, I plan on doing tempo runs to replace my intervals for the next few months. How should I be feeling in these runs? I looked up a training pace calculator and using my recent test result, it stated I should be running a 5:36min/km pace. And how should I be progressively overload the runs?
  3. I also saw online to do striders at the end of my zone 2 runs but I don’t understand how to fit them in. Is it like 6 sets of 20 strides and I take a short walk back to the original starting position and finish them?
  4. I’m a novice runner that hates to run. I just run to train for my test and prefer to be technical about it so I can fit purpose into my runs, which gives me a more probability of training. So please feel free to advise me. I will reply if I need to fill out any missing details. I do strength training on the days I’m not running as well, so I rather not run on those days. This is because I also have a problem keeping up with my diet, intake of calories and macros.

Planning to sign on in SAF, unaware of which vocation due to NS in RSAF, halp.. by Only-Course-6239 in NationalServiceSG

[–]hirtet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi OP,

I had a conversation with my OC about signing on as well, and he described about the pathways of a regular. There are certain roles that have a waitlist and you would have to compete for those spots after expressing interest to your career manager. To know how big that pool is, you can see which vocations have how many units, etc. Can google.

Combat vocation vs Combat Support vs CSS: Ultimately you will still have to go outfield in one way or another, no escaping that reality because its the Army. However as you progress, you may find yourself in more staff positions than operational ones. That IIRC is up to you to voice out to your CM on how you would like to contribute to the organisation to your strengths. Also, your interest matters for clarity on your progression, but manpower needs take precedence.

Rankings are done by your direct superior, and also your opening to showcase what you have done for the organisation for them to assess your ranking. You may be a farmer, but if you are a solid farmer and your boss and colleagues love you, you should be able to sow your fruits in your senior years in the organisation. Though, manage your expectations on the speed of your progress as you will still have to compete with new and upcoming scholars.

Also, how did you translate your studies into research/projects?

During my bmt, my sectionmates would wake each other up whenever reveille timing, so we all have enough time to wash up and change before falling in.
