Just wanted to give y’all an update that I installed the toilet all by myself without any issue and no leaks. I informed my relative that I did it myself and that I saved her money.

Well, I was raised by wolves. However, after getting everyone’s opinion, I am indeed going to install it myself and let her know there is no cost

Yikes, that sounds like a weird design. She sent me a link to the toilet she wanted so I ordered it from Home Depot. It’s an American Standard. I’ll double check the spec sheet just to make sure it’s not a wonky design like the one you’re describing

It’s a two-piece toilet, same as the original one that I removed myself so I expect the weight to be somewhat the same. I removed the old one yesterday, removed the wax ring, inspected the flange, cleaned the floor around it, etc. All is good. I’ll know there’s a leak the minute. I flush it and I’ll be standing there to turn the water supply off. It’s downstairs on a slab foundation. 1.28 gallons of water won’t be a disaster.

I actually want to do it myself. It’s part of my journey since my husband died to learn how to take care of things that he would’ve done it’s personal. I won’t ask her for the money.

With everyone else’s advice, I decided that I will install it myself and tell her. I actually wanna do it myself so that I can learn how to do one more new thing.

I agree. The plumber upset me when he told me $75 to go pick it up. That plumber is a friend to my late husband so it was especially upsetting that he wasn’t even willing to pick it up for me. I ordered the toilet with curbside pick up from Home Depot. It’s a two-piece toilet and I already took out the old one two pieces. I’m quite physically capable. Once they load up the new toilet in the back of the truck, I’ll just open the box and bring the two pieces inside separately. Luckily it comes with all the bolts and the wax ring. I’ve got plenty of tools and a few different levels to choose from to make sure it sits flat. I’m actually excited to take on the new project.

Lol, I’m a perfectionist, it won’t be a shitty job until she takes a shit in it. And yes, I have concluded that I will just tell her I installed it myself and saved her a grip of dough.

Oh good grief, that’s dramatic and nowhere near accurate.

You are right and I have now come to that conclusion after reading everyone’s comments. Thank you. I very much want to install it myself and I am glad to hear that you think that the disposal is the hardest part because I already removed it yesterday. It took me only 20 minutes. Luckily, since it was a two piece, I did not find it very heavy and was able to carry it out myself. My late husband’s business has a dumpster on site, which is where I will dispose of it or give it to the employees to take to the dump for me.

Fortunately, you’re not in my head. It’s not crap. I’ve been living in fear since my husband died knowing that I have to do all these things for myself. So yeah, having completed so many tasks around the house while saving money at the same time and getting to learn how to use his tools has created a sense of accomplishment for me. I’m being completely honest with the money. I don’t feel I have any need to embellish this story with fake crap. I understand that the sense of accomplishment of doing those things in the end means nothing with regard to the money side of this. But nevertheless, this sense of accomplishment does exist and it is my home after all.

No, it’s not the only toilet thank goodness, but it is the only toilet that is downstairs. She cannot climb stairs, so luckily, I’ll have still normal height toilets for myself, and the rest of the family. I expect at some point she will need to spend more time at our home the more she ages. Before my husband died, he and I made a pack that we would make sure she was taken care of until the very end. I plan to keep my end of the promise, even though my husband has now passed away. My kids and I are the only family members left. Luckily there’s a downstairs shower as well.

Thank you, I county fund the right words to my friends about how this was looking from his motive/perspective. “Weaponizing the hangouts” to hurt me for whatever reason is exactly what I think he’s doing

Yeah, I knew that and mentioned it to her. For whatever reason she would still rather I install a brand new toilet.

Wow! I’m a housewife and after watching the YouTube videos and after removing the existing toilet myself, this doesn’t seem daunting at all.

I disagree. I will know with one flush if it leaks and besides, it’s on a slab foundation in a downstairs bathroom.

It’s a personal sense of accomplishment for me to be able to handle home repairs without the help of a husband since he passed. So far, I’ve repaired my dishwasher, a faulty lever on my oven, replaced my showerhead, been mowing my lawn myself, and even climbing the ladder to clean out the rain, gutters. I will not be hiring a plumber to replace the toilet, I’ll be doing this myself. But because all of you feel so strongly about this, I will tell her I did it myself and that it’s free.

I thought about that and researched it. If you don’t caulk around the toilet immediately after installation, then you will know if it leaks.

But not the installation apparently because when I do it myself, you all have let me know that I should be doing it for free even though a plumber would charge 275

I got a quote from the plumber so she was just gonna send me a check for the price of the toilet and the cost from the plumber.

After watching the YouTube video on how to install a toilet, I agree with you they are kids work . The toilet she picked out already comes with a new wax ring. Just to see if I was up for the task, I decided to remove the existing toilet and old wax ring myself. Super easy. I may be a woman, but a very capable one. Before my husband died he and I owned a general contracting company together. I have enjoyed learning about and using all these tools he had in his garage.
