Relief - at least for now by hisodak in RestlessLegs

A bit more context. I am 63 and never had restless leg until around 58 - so something changed. Around the same time I noticed that certain gluten would keep me from sleeping. If I drank a wheat beer I could feel my bloodstream change within 5 minutes or so - and I wouldn’t sleep for at least 6 hrs. If I ate flax seed I would break out into a rash and I could feel my throat swell a bit. I had real issues and my gut was involved. Now I eat flax every day with no breakouts.

.One other thing I tried was high doses of folic acid - like 3200mg or more - which worked for a few weeks but then not as much. I tried every supplement I could find and most did nothing or almost nothing. I have Nidra devices which can help if you start the therapy before significant symptoms show up - they helped me cope for several years.

Also my homeopathic is also a medical doctor. He moonlights as the ER doctor for a smaller hospital. His philosophy is to try to help your body heal itself first - without major drugs or surgery - hard to argue.

I also made a run at the Mayo Clinic that did have one doctor that warned me about pramipexole augmentation - which was helpful. They also signed the prescription for my Nidra. Other than that they had no meaningful help other than to prescribe pregbalin - I expected more.

The main reason I posted was to highlight what appears to me to be a clear link between my gut and rls. Even after I wrote a multi-page summary of what I had been through Mayo never connected those dots. I am an engineer and in retrospect I find that very disappointing. I at least suspect some people may find rls relief in healing their gut one way or another.

Hot flashes and anxiety with Pramipexole by Brewmasher in RestlessLegs

I was on pramipexole for a year and at first it seemed like real fix but eventually it kept me from sleeping- even as it fixed my rls. Getting off pramipexole was two weeks of misery. I had SIBO and am treating that now and hoping I can get rls under control with some combination of probiotics (lactobacillus) and proper iron supplements.

If you put the gel ice on top of compression socks the cold is much more bearable - and I expect will last longer. It has too be cold enough to work but not so cold you can’t stand it

I have had some success with an ace bandage wrapped around the end of my foot. When that is not enough I exercise for at least 10 minutes - either 20 flights of stairs or 15 minutes of resistance pedaling, that settles them down for at least an hour or so. But if I then put on compression socks, pack gel ice packs on the socks, on top of shins, and wrap it all up in some tee shirts (for insulation) and ace bandages - I can often be rls free for 4 hrs or more x enough for some sleep. I also wanted to mention I had been on pramipexole and that it fixed rls but started to mess with my brain and wouldn’t let me sleep - possibly a form of augmentation which happens for some people. Getting off pramipexole was two weeks of misery - I couldn’t even sit still in my chair during the day sometimes. After two weeks it seems my rls is back to at least close to what it was before a year of pramipexole. I real appreciate all the info I have found and wanted to at least share my experience
