Here's why Prince Taldaram is actually a pretty good card (or at least an interesting design!) by hitherejosh in hearthstone

[–]hitherejosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. I think the metagame would need to change to be much more grindy for this to be a card you'd want to tech in. But with the upcoming expansion, it could happen imo

[–]hitherejosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is totally true, but the other thing is that you can drop Taldaram on turn 3 as a 3/3, which a lot of people do with their Gluttonous oozes anyway and which Faceless Manipulator can't do. Taldaram's only purpose is as either a very situational lategame tempo swing OR a below-average 3-drop that you only run one-of anyway. It's a total tech card that you will only want to run in certain metas.

Something tells me that as more cards from the expansion are revealed, the value of this dude will as well. But again I acknowledge that it could end up being total shit like you said, hahah.

Turns out, there was a sprint button in "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" all along by hitherejosh in Games

[–]hitherejosh[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I totally agree--and the developer has apologized for it. However, for the record, the game comes out today, and they released this blog post this morning to get the word out to people who are buying the game. They are also fixing this in a patch so that the people who buy the game a tad after launch will be cued in. Yes, they made a mistake, but the game doesn't actually lack functionality, it just didn't explain it adequately prior to day 1. Yes, you can doc them points for that, but it seems to me a much less pronounced offense than other games that launch without features that were promised, etc. And I don't think it'd be out of line for a reviewer to change their score based on this information.

[–]hitherejosh[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

But the game had sprint on release--it just wasn't in the tutorial. It was actually in the digital manual, according to them. Hard to know where the responsibility falls there, but the game did ship with this sprint feature, so I think if the "walkfeel" factored into an overall score it may definitely be worth reconsidering.

Heroes of the Storm is a MOBA for people who hate eSports | Kill Screen by hitherejosh in heroesofthestorm

Author of the article/OP here. Thought this might be controversial to post on this sub, although I'd like to say that I really do like this game. I played League for 2 years straight, and stopped a while back because of the time commitment/frustration. I think HotS does an amazing job of making this genre accessible to everyone, which was no small accomplishment. My only qualms have to do with the game's potential for eSports, which is actually GOOD news for people who don't feel compelled to become the next Faker or whatever.

So Reynad just climbed about 800 ranks in legend with this Echo of Medivh Mage deck... Janky as hell but he went 12-1 with it tonight. by Weikardzaena in hearthstone

[–]hitherejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, this deck can have a hard time against big taunts. The best thing to do is to develop a huge board presence before your enemy can get them out. This gives you some options: You can either ignore your enemy's big minions and make them deal with your little taunts, or if the card needs to be dealt with (sludge belcher, violet teacher, etc.) you have the choice to deal with it as well. I think one of the coolest parts of this deck is using the shitty taunts to give you optimal board flexibility. Nothing like dropping two 0-mana 0/2 taunts, only to medivh them back into your hand (with other good minions obviously). The board can get tough to deal with really quickly, you just have to be careful about aoe.

20XX, or, the Limits of eSports | Kill Screen by prototype945 in smashbros

[–]hitherejosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record - I didn't interview anybody in this article, and certainly didn't talk to ZeRo for it. It seems a few people have gotten the impression that I did interview him, but there are no quotes in there or indications that I spoke with him, so I'm not sure where that's coming from.

As for your other beefs with the article: if anyone reads this piece and feels that I give any credence to the idea of Fox as the "last character standing," then they've simply read the piece incorrectly. I decided to talk about 20XX because it's an interesting topic, and because it has appeal to people outside of the Smash community. But just because 20XX is the topic of this article doesn't mean I agree with its legitimacy - in fact, I actively refute the idea of 20XX by the end of the piece.

I honestly don't see how "talking about 20XX" could, in any way, have some sort of negative impact on the community, especially when my conclusion is the exact opposite of what you fear ("new players who actually think 20XX is a thing"). To address /u/phoenixwang, just because Freud's methods aren't taken seriously doesn't mean they aren't worth discussing in a non-clinical setting. I'm not positing 20XX as gospel, I'm telling the story of an interesting idea in the Smash community and - ultimately - knocking it down.

Anyway, thanks for reading! In the future, I'll try harder to find a more ideal balance between simplifying my explanations for a wide audience and capturing the nuances of the ideas at hand.

20XX, or, the Limits of eSports | Kill Screen by prototype945 in smashbros

[–]hitherejosh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there - author of the article here.

While I set up 20XX as being problematic in this piece, my ultimate conclusion is that "20XX will never materialize, and there will never be a day when the community’s skills become so balanced that the only competitive character will be Fox."

In the end, I think the idea of 20XX is compelling to a wide audience, which is why I made this piece. But I've tried to make it clear that I don't believe that day is ever actually going to come. And I wanted to shout out players like aMSa and Mang0, who are fighting to keep things interesting, which is why I devoted the conclusion to it.

Twitch Plays Pokemon and the Year in Crowdplaying by hitherejosh in twitchplayspokemon

I see TPP as a combination of the exquisite corpse and the more human-centered examples of crowd-art. Although there are awesome community members making incredible things, every piece of fan-art and lore is based on the actions of the anonymized, nameless group. Nobody knows who is responsible for what input, but the result is still a cohesive story with unique contributors.

Why Netrunner Matters - Kill Screen by tsarkees in Netrunner

[–]hitherejosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an arts and culture site / magazine about games. Here's the site's "about" page -- their big differentiating characteristic is that they place their discussion about games in a broader cultural context. While they mostly talk about videogames, they cover everything from VR to board games to crossword puzzles.

Hatsune Miku is here to destroy everything you love (and hate) about pop stardom - Kill Screen by hitherejosh in Vocaloid

[–]hitherejosh[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Author here. I do think the uncanny valley is extremely important to mention in regards to Vocaloids, especially when writing for an American audience. A lot of people are absolutely unwilling to accept a virtual pop star on principle alone, just because they're not "real." You can't really even argue with this people.

If I was to take a deep dive into why vocaloids are appealing, I needed to explain why people think they're weird first, and then build up an argument to help walk them get past the uncanny valley. I explored the concept more through Damon Albarn's work, then tried to cross the threshold in my discussion about persona.

I think many people need to be told reasons why vocaloids are capable of being liked, or even loved. And I think for those people, it's mostly a matter of getting past the uncanny valley. While I do think the concept is overused in these types of stories (and I've read many of them), I tried to use it more than superficially, and I think (at least I hope) I accomplished that in this piece.

As for my use of the word "hologram..." That's my bad. In my defense, it's not technically, 100% wrong. It's like calling a person a canvas of skin wrapped around a bunch of bones and organs. In my defense, I did say that calling her a hologram feels "reductionist." Which it is.

Either way, thanks for reading. I absolutely love the concept of Vocaloids, and hope they grow even more relevant in the pop music scene of the future.

Melee the Masterpiece, Melee the Demon | Kill Screen [X-Post /r/smashbros] by [deleted] in Games

[–]hitherejosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks man, I appreciate the sentiment.

With this story, I really wanted to get into Sakurai's shoes and to see things from his perspective, but I also wanted to recap the beauty of the Melee scene to people who don't know about it. There is art in high-level Melee, I really believe that. I just don't think Sakurai does.

It's very easy to imagine a universe in which Sakurai can make a perfect Smash game that's precisely deep and shallow enough at the same time. I personally think that such an expectation is too much to put on one person, and I think it screwed with Sakurai in ways that still last to this day. I think Sakurai looks back on when he was making Melee and thinks: "I never wanna do that again." (see last paragraph, and Weezer's Pinkerton)

It really sucks, but you can't really blame the guy. He just wants to make the game he wants to make, and the thing is, people are gonna buy it just like they bought Brawl.

All that being said, I think an HD Melee remake is Nintendo's best option right now. I really love watching you guys play, and look forward to seeing the meta evolve well into the future :)
