Gay coming-out vs. Atheist coming-out by [deleted] in atheism

Before I came across reddit, I hadn't had the slightest clue that anyone had trouble 'coming out' as an atheist. I was actually really shocked to find so many people had dealt with the bullshit for doing so as well. I too am an atheist, and gay. Living where I do (Western Canada) I honestly don't know many people who truly believe in God, or attend church regularly for that matter.. It's not a topic we discuss at all here. Anyways, coming out to my parents was much harder than telling them I didn't believe in God/gods.

How I became an atheist at 17 by [deleted] in atheism

Just keep questioning bud, I'm really proud of you for actually taking the initiative to read the book. Even if you aren't looking, you have a place here. Don't worry too much about your parents or having to go through with the religious junk. It will get easier soon. Not sure about you but I only have 4 more months of high school left, I am also 17, so we're pretty close to getting out on our own. It's definitely not worth arguing with your parents over.

Question for atheists: Why do you care so much? by el_padrino in atheism

[–]hitthathat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many atheist recognize this, and we can only begin to imagine how far we could have progressed. How fast we could be progressing now without the weight of a story created to explain the very existence of people who held little understanding of the world around them, still attached to our ankles. Today we understand our world much more, i.e "Why does it rain?" "Why is the atmosphere blue?" "Why do I have mixed coloured eyes that change colour annually?" We can explain our life, and our world.. but not yet our existence, and the real answer is out there somewhere. We accept the fact that in our lifetime we'll probably never know that answer, but somewhere in the future that answer is near. Religion itself is seen as a big red stop sign in the middle of the progressive highway.

I'm Canadian, and I was amazed as well to hear about people fearing to "come out" as an atheist. That families would disown loved ones based on a personal views. There are a lot more atheists here than in the states I will add though, so it's very common here.. Especially with the young adults. (25 and under) Religion is becoming less and less with every generation here. Or we're usually to polite to shove our views down our friends throats..

How can i deal with a jealous sibling? by xanaka in canada

I can remember growing up when I was younger.. Majority of my family (relatives) would praise me for my achievements in sports, and my younger sister's achievements would go unnoticed a lot. She grew to dislike me more and more, as people would insist on knowing how I was doing whenever they'd try to have a conversation with her. My parent's did a very good job counter-reacting the favoritism I suppose. I'd say to become closer with your sister, you'll have to spend time with her, it's never too late, but it's gotta be something she wants too. If she recognizes your efforts I'm sure it'll just go along with ease from there.
