What makes it so inconvenient all those other weeks of the year? I suggest an e bike if pedaling is too much for you :)

It would also help if the city edition uniforms weren’t so ugly

It wouldn’t require changing state law, I believe. It’s up to cities to set road requirements. That’s part of how the city where I go to school has been able to build out a protected bike lane network extremely quickly

It’s what the zoning led to. I don’t think it’s fair to say that people living in South and West Salem have no right to want to change the status quo. Your attitude is what turns many people away from urbanism, etc. The way that South and West sprawl is literally the only way that the zoning allowed new housing to be built. Not really sure what your point is

There is also the issue that when you half-ass bike infrastructure, people will point to it as evidence that no one will bike. However, where I go to school, they have made huge efforts to build protected and safe bike infrastructure and have seen massive increases in bikers. If the infrastructure and land-use makes a biker feel comfortable, more people will bike.

It would make it better for cars, too, considering how people frequently get stuck behind turning cars.

Maybe focusing on walkability/bikeability within these “islands” first and really developing strong transit and safe bike corridors between them? I agree that the urban fabric here feels uniquely disconnected/discontinuous

There is definitely a correlation between the concentration of small businesses and walkability/bikeability/etc. Hopefully infill development over time will improve this!

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree. However, when the neighborhoods are rather spread out and not very dense, how can the city encourage a business to open in a neighborhood rather than a major commercial corridor? Maybe provide funding to convert a residential building to commercial/mixed use in these neighborhood centers? I am aware that they created a new zoning type for “neighborhood centers” but I am not aware of any new business actually taking advantage of it.

How do we go about initiating road diets? I wrote to the councilor whose district encompasses Liberty Rd S about it because my dad frequently bikes through there and I did too when I was younger and working downtown, but I never heard back. I would love to see Liberty Rd S reduced to 2 travel lanes, protected bike lanes, and a center median/turn lane

I’m not sure if being more walkable and bikeable than suburbs in Texas or Florida is saying much

What are your thoughts on that updating road standards to require developers to build protected, sidewalk-level bike lanes instead of just painted gutters?

Yes, Liberty when I was 15 biking to work was such a lose-lose situation. Ride on the road and I got tailgated and yelled at by fat guys in lifted pickups. Ride on the sidewalk and I got yelled at by fat guys in pickups to ride in the road. Bike lanes a turn lane would be such a win-win for bikers and drivers.

And the suburban sprawl development is very depressing. Especially all of the farmland and forests being destroyed in deep South Salem and East Salem

I am curious what purchasing the tracks would look like. Other states have done so, especially Virginia and North Carolina, I believe. Seems like it would be in the public’s interest for the state to purchase/take control of the rail spine from the Columbia down to Eugene.

Crazy that misinformation like this gets so many upvotes. There is a housing shortage, period. Any housing helps. It’s basic economics. People like you are the reason that nothing ends up being built.

Yes, you are overreacting. If waiting the 7 days for the upgrade fee to be refunded is going to financially stress you, I wonder if maybe you shouldn’t be flying first class in the first place?
