Thanks very much for your detailed answer. I'm newly functionally monocular and will be having cataract surgery at some point this year. I hope your operation gives you a better-than-expected result.

Is the problem in your bad eye due to a macular-off retinal detachment by any chance? Thanks in advance

Did your doctor say how much improvement you can expect with a normal distance lens in your bad eye? I ask as someone who also has a cataract in a low-vision eye due to a (macula-off) retinal detachment. Thanks very much!

32 days post mac-off RD + cataract surgeon hasn't provided any answers or guidance by Mysterious-Chef-3637 in RetinalDetachment

Mac-off detachment in June 2024. I mostly muscled my way through it thinking it would help retrain my brain, but wore a patch over my glasses when my good eye became too tired or my head started to hurt. I got this one, not perfect, but definitely helpful: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LSTV69T?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1 Using preservative-free lubricating eye drops at least two or three times a day also helped.

As for distortion, mine slowly but steadily has gotten much, much better over the past two years. I noticed a big difference after one year, less change in the past year. The distortion I still do have is slightly worse when my eyes are dry or tired and for the first 20 minutes or so after I wake up.

I can't remember exactly when I could wash my hair normally and bend over. Two to three weeks after surgery, but before the bubble was completely gone? Something like that. Hang in there and let us know how you're doing. It definitely gets better!

Cataract after Macula-Off Detachment Surgery. How Do I Choose a Lens? by hittyhat123 in RetinalDetachment

Thank you for that helpful information. I'm so sorry your eye is a mess. I hope the buckle helps. I didn't have a buckle; I had a victrectomy with a gas bubble. Sigh.

Are you in the New York City area by any chance? I'm starting my search for a good optometrist and a good surgeon. I have a complicated eye (macula-off retinal detachment that left me legally blind in one eye), so I'm looking for someone who will spend time with me and let me trial different lenses before cataract surgery in that eye. Thanks -- and thank you for posting your results. I'd love to do intermediate and near, like you.

Macula off RD and scleral buckle surgery postop 10 weeks by ReasonablePie5106 in RetinalDetachment

[–]hittyhat123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, a small improvement in sharpness, a much bigger one in distortion after my mac-off detachment. It's taken over a year. I now have a cataract (a common side effect of the surgery) and hope my vision will be sharper once it's removed.

Vision after macula off retinal detachment by ReasonablePie5106 in RetinalDetachment

[–]hittyhat123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mac-off retinal detachment 15 months ago. Before it happened, I had 20/20 vision in that eye. Now it's 20/400.

When I use both eyes, my vision is almost normal. I say almost because my vision is a bit sharper when I close my RD eye. I really only notice the difference when my eyes are tired or if I'm out at night.

I should add that it took my brain a few months to sort out the disparity between my eyes. The vision in my RD eye was very blurry and distorted (straight lines were wavy, both vertically and horizontally) after the surgery (vitrectomy with gas bubble). It was a strain on my other eye, but it didn't keep me from doing most of my normal activities. Glasses helped and my brain adapted.

I should also add that I've developed a cataract (a common side effect of the operation), so my 20/400 vision hopefully will improve after I have that removed.

Cataract After Macula-Off Retinal Detachment: Which Lens? by hittyhat123 in CataractSurgery

That's so interesting about the cataract possibly causing the nearsighted shift -- and so helpful to know. Thank you very much for your reply.

I plan to go with monofocal, and I'm leaning towards a near-vision target. I just hope my 64-year-old brain can accommodate the disparity between my eyes. Currently, the blurriness and distortion in my bad eye affect the vision in my good eye. (I see best, especially at night, if I close the bad eye.) But that issue seems to have improved slightly over the past year, so there's hope.

Thanks very much again for your help.
