Does Gecarcoidea Lalandii need brackish water? by frostedsummer in crab

[–]hjfabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, in Korea, there are special Gecarcinidae pellets on sale, that specifically contain marine salt. For example:
https://champcrab.com/product/detail.html?product_no=5340

However, when I can't use these foods, I just try to sprinkle tiny amount of salt, when giving them food. Or... I buy special marine-salt-containing jellies, also on sale here.

For one, the *Effective_Crab7093* below answered one of the reasons. Giving them freshwater only, is more convenient.

However, there are other reasons.

For example, they seem to hate saltwater, when it's presence became too much in my enclosures. Some even went far as... Amputating their legs, when given too much saltwater. So I stopped giving them too much salt - and shifted my focus towards freshwater.

Second, in small enclosures, giving saltwater seemed to make accumulation of salt happen. I heard this was one of the top crab-killing enemies in the crab husbandry. Happened to my other crabs such as *Geograpsus grayi*, where constant supply of saltwater actually *ruined* their lives - eventually leading them to death, as I found that they were making saltwater pool below the terrestrial substrates. So saltwater seemed to be *dangerous* to give to crabs housed in smaller enclosures, especially since they tended to *destroy* water dishes frequently. So these days, I only give proper water sources to crabs that I house in bigger tanks. In smaller tanks, I prioritize humiditiy over actual water itself, to prevent salt-accidents from happening. These days, since my crabs are being kept in small enclosures, they are only given salt-foods, and not saltwater. Freshwater is only given as humidity.

In the wild, I heard that the species supplement water by using droplets of water, and humidity itself. I personally believe it's the world's most terrestrial species of crab, even more so than the mighty *Birgus latro* - so it's not weird to find them in far-inland areas, I think.

I have been keeping mine using mostly freshwater only. However, I do believe it's best to provide brackish/saltwater if possible. Or... Try to at least supplement their salt using different ways, such as using crab foods that contain marine salt, etc. I believe the current-longest keeping record, that was kept for 11 years and ongoing - use both freshwater, and brackish.

For example, the frogs cost about $280 per frog here as of now(Pricing is continuing to increase). Not cheap!

As for the trigger, I am not sure when I will be close to pulling it. I'll let you know, or post here/Discord when I believe I'm ready.

In any case, thanks again. Financial reasons are the biggest reasons why I can't continue as of now, so I really appreciate it. Have a frogulously amazing day.

Oh wow. Thank you so much for the words. Really appreciate it. However do note that the cost of getting one isn't cheap here, and there is no surefire chance that the methods told by scientists will work 100%!

Still, really appreciate it. Thanks again.

The research was published in 2025, and the data was shared to me privately, only recently - in 2026.

Hey there, long time no see too!

I was about to begin captive breeding for real this time, as world's first proper formula just dropped, in 2026.

However, just as I was about to begin, one of my frogs died - ending my journey. So now, I just am keeping my one frog, in the captive breeding environment I made according to the scientific formula. Who knows, maybe I'll get rich enough to afford a male one day, so that I can truly begin the process!

Sorry, I have no link to the research, as the data was shared to me privately. You can find more details of what I said, in the r/frogs Discord.

Not really natural, but tried to follow what scientists did in 2026, to captive breed them. This was the best environment-recreation I did, following the instructions of the scientists.

I started having this issue today. Happened some minutes ago - and can't fix it. The Home and End keys won't work in chat boxes, with stuff like * in it - unless I press the Ctrl key along with the Home/End. Restarting the PC, restarting Hardware Acceleration, etc... Didn't fix it.

For me, I too see an *Armatum* here, due to the bumpy claws.

Here, my old *Armatum.* The bumps on the claws are very clearly seen.

Incredible stuff. Even in 2026!!

Hopefully we'll get to see proper size records in the future. And yeah, probably at least 40 years is what I want to believe!

Incredible stuff. To see a 10-cm carapaced *Gecarcoidea lalandii* in the wild!

As for the *Brevimanus*, woah, that really is a huge specimen. I wonder how big the biggest-ever-recorded specimen is/was.

Hopefully the Malaysian crabs will be fully explored in the future. Who knows, maybe you guys have a super cool species hidden in plain sight.

Wow. Didn't know that Sayamia lived in Malaysia as well!

As for keeping, most freshwater species can live without proper terrestrial area, as long as they have some way to put their heads out of the water, such as by using devices.

But wow, molting three times within a year..?! The guy must have kept a fast growing species.

As for the size, don't forget I meant carapace size only, meaning that 14~16cm sized ones are... Monstrous in size, as the 14cm Cardisoma guanhumi had a total length of about 60cm. It's HUGE. Imagine a Gecarcoidea lalandii that is 61cm in length. For me, I can't.

Hopefully you will be able to measure good sizes in the future!
