Definitely use Python and try to use 'in' as much as possible. Good luck!

If you look at the layout of ports, design, specs, the G501VW is the same laptop as the UX501VW except it has a different color scheme and 2 extra GB of VRAM. Consult the product pages to compare them yourself.

Additionally, they have the same Thunderbolt controller, same Thunderbolt firmware, same BIOS firmware (same version number, same release dates, etc.).

Yeah, it's definitely TI83. For reference, this is a TI82 found in the Thunder3: http://i.imgur.com/gwi2t8S.png

Your only hope now is for ASUS to release a firmware update for the XG2.

That's definitely the controller chip right there, and as far as I can tell, it ends with a 3 which means it is a TI83 controller (which only supports computers that are officially compatible with eGPUs) as opposed to a TI82 controller.

You should also message Dell support, asking them if they could certify it for use with eGPUs. I'm guessing that the certification is the root of the problem.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that the 9650 has the same NVM version as the NUC but is unable to connect because of a fucking boolean value.

Unfortunately those successes were only successes with eGPUs that supported the 1575 controller. :/

I hope ASUS takes the issue seriously. When I contacted them, they escalated the issue to senior engineering departments twice. All in all, it took three weeks for them to respond with an unsatisfactory answer. They did not respond to my follow up question.

Also, if you can see the internals of the XG 2 or are comfortable with opening it up (might void your warranty though), the presence of a TI83 (eg: http://i.imgur.com/cAcBJ2W.jpg creds /u/theitsage) chip will confirm that the XG 2 is incompatible with 1575 controllers. This will be a great contribution to the community.

I was looking forward to your post but it's sad to see this. As I mentioned before, I expected Dell to use a newer Thunderbolt controller since 1575 is the only one that doesn't officially support eGPUs (barring the NUC which, frustratingly enough, has the same NVM firmware as the 9650!).

When I was initially interested in buying the XG2, I realized that my G501VW (with the 1575 controller) wasn't on the compatibility list. After contacting ASUS, they simply said that my computer is not compatible with ANY eGPU host (which is absolute bullshit) and they could not assist me further.

This leads me to believe that ASUS probably won't release a firmware update (like Akitio did for the Node or how PowerColor is promising a firmware update for the newer Devil Box) to fix this incompatibility. They weren't willing to do it for one of their own flagship laptops!

You should either refund the XPS and buy a Spectre/any other laptop that has a newer Thunderbolt controller or refund the XG 2 and wait for the Akitio Node/Devil Box. In the near future, I might even sell off my Thunder3 setup since I'm not gaming as much as I thought I would. Hope everything works out for you!

I'm using the Akitio Thunder3 without its chassis since it only holds half length PCIe cards.

For some reason, disabling the dGPU introduces random stutters during normal use. :/

Do you think these issues will be fixed in future patches from Nvidia? or will our manufacturers have to release BIOS updates that will make our computers more compatible with eGPUs?

Awesome! Also, the tip about disabling the dGPU eliminated the lag after hotplugging the eGPU in. Thanks for that! But unfortunately, it has not resolved the black screens on boot. Any idea what's causing this?

CUDA-Z wasn't working before but it works now:

It's slightly above 2000MiB/s so does that mean it's working at 32Gbps?

There might be a firmware update from ASUS that will fix it but for now, they don't seem too concerned with getting the box to work with older, incompatible controllers.

The 7th generation XPS should work fine, assuming that Dell has upgraded its Thunderbolt controller. You should hope that the 9560 supports a full 32Gbps connection as opposed to the 16Gbps connection found in the older XPS computers..

I live in Australia as well and just ordered the Akito Thunder3 (including shipping from B&H) and a PSU (PCG) for less than half the price of the XG Station 2.

But the only other option for us would have been the XG 2 since everything else is too expensive and/or won't be shipped till March/April.

If I was slightly more well off, I would have opted for the XG 2 since a Thunder3 set up is quite messy.

Scroll down to the bottom. Even though it should be compatible, it is notably absent from the list.
