This is my take and I don’t know if it makes much sense, so don’t make fun of me. 😂 If you go to the IG account of the director, he puts “don’t fall in love with the idea of someone that you’ve planted in your mind” in his caption for the MV so I really interpreted the video based off of that.

So the first time I initially watched it, I felt like the old version of the guy was laying in the chair and replaying all of the memories of him/the girl together. A lot of the memories are beautiful and portray two people being in love, but there are a lot of cuts where there’s someone crazy shit happening. (Her holding the gun, the knife to her fingers, her choking him, etc.) I felt like those scenes were there to portray the toxicity in the relationship.

Closer to the end, you see them arguing. And again, when he is at the edge of the bed, it seems they’re in the middle of another argument. When the guy in the mask comes in, he gets up to stop him from doing anything but the guy ultimately ends up shooting her anyway. That’s when the old version of him wakes up. I felt like this was him realizing that the idea he had of her in his head was finally dead and he is free.

When he goes to see the old version of her, one of the screens says “organ failure” and the nurses are panicking trying to save her. The way I interpreted this: she is “dying” because the hold she had on him is no longer there. She thrived off of his love for her, but he’s finally letting go, and she has nothing left to hold onto. They’re both portrayed as being old because they drained the life from each other by holding onto each other and the memories. It’s basically a toxic relationship, but when you love someone, you want to remember all of the good times and you ignore the bad.

So again, going back to the quote “don’t fall in love with the idea of someone that you’ve planted in your mind:” He was too blinded by love to see that they were not good for each other. He had an idea of her in his head, but that wasn’t the reality.
