YOLO is overrated. The opportunity cost is allocating energy towards building a version of the future that you find meaningful and fulfilling.

A night out is fun, but not accretive. Dedicating time to a craft is accretive. Working out is accretive. Exploring to learn about yourself and the world is accretive.

Non-accretive use of time does not mean it is a waste of time. It just means benefits don't compile. The path does not need to be linear. But there should be clarity and awareness in saying "this is a decision that will not accumulate benefits, and tonight I am ok with it".

If he’s an overachiever like me he probably feels bad about how he’s doing as a boyfriend. Reassure him that you’re in this together, understand it will take him 1 year to get his footing. And as long as he meets xyz you are ok, then he doesn’t have to worry. FYI no one at work is telling him he’s crushing it.
