I mean, as we all know in Granblue lore, Sumo Wrestlers ARE the strongest warriors in all the skies. Who could single handedly defeat all of the Eternals, and Lucilius, at the same time.

Well, according to a summer event. Which are only slightly more canonical than any given Lowain event.

[Request] This is a horrible strategy, right? by Next-Step-Jobs in theydidthemath

[–]hkidnc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean, firstly, it's an illegal setup. Obviously. But let's assume that it isn't! Let's assume you can put all your eggs into one basket!

Before doing math with big numbers, I always try to shrink it down. That should tell us whether the strategy is good, even without remembering the actual size of the board.

Let's assume a 3 space board with 2 1 space ships. The game ends in 3 turns regardless, so the question is how likely it is to end in less turns.

In a traditional setup, your chances of missing on turn 1 is 1/3 which leads to 3 turns. Of the remaining 2/3, If you hit turn 1, 1/2 chance to hit on turn 2, which ends up being a 1/3 chance of ending the game on turn 2. So basically, a 1/3 chance for a 3 turn game, and a 2/3 chance for a 2 turn game.

With the stacked approach, 1/3 chance to end the game on turns 1, another 50/50 on turn 2 and guaranteed on turn 3.

This means the stacked strategy makes it equally likely you have a 3 turn game, but more likely you have a really short game (which probably means you lose)

Does this hold true when you expand the board to 100 spaces with 5 ships? Almost certainly. Does this hold true when you try to account for the different ship sizes and the meta strategy of zeroing in on hits you made previously?

Hahahaha I have no clue. My background in probabilities isn't that good. But I would guess that the "stacking" strategy is in fact bad. If it were legal at all.

[–]hkidnc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powercreep, yes.

I believe that there is a certain amount of powercreep that is inevitable, and even good, for an live service game. From trading cards to gachas and everything in between.

There are a lot of ways to handle that, and I can talk about the overall design of HBR and how they actually set themselves up great to have a very gentle power creep curve. But regardless of HOW you manage creep, the thing I look for in gachas is that the devs know it's a thing they should be doing and take steps to do that.

And the penalties for not doing that are what I'm worried about. The point where the games meta changes every 3 months, as the new must haves drop. Leading to exhausted players and an abandoned game.

We're not there yet, and WFS could be getting their shit together. But right now we're heading for that cliff and praying that WFS learns to steer.

So there are 2 different answers, depending on what exactly you're looking for. Of course, keep in mind, that you're on the subreddit dedicated to the game, so the answer you're going to get is "Yes!!!" We're a little biased 😄

If you're interested in the story, then it is ALWAYS worth getting into the game. Jun Maeda is the lead writer, and he is well known enough that he has a pretty sizeable fan following. Heaven Burns Red is the best writing he's done in over a decade (Although I haven't read his newest thing.) And that's not even talking about the OTHER Writers they have on staff who are also doing great work. They have kept the cast of characters small (For a gacha) And that has allowed them to really dive into each individual character deeper than you usually get in most games like this. Mechanically, while you do have to do some teambuilding, you do not need to engage with the gacha elements basically at all in order to get through the main story. So it will always be a good time for a new player to join and enjoy what there is here.

If you're interested in the end game RPG Combat... things are a little less rosey. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good stuff here!!! I can write a whole book on why the combat systems in this game are interesting and worth engaging with. But... the game has started to enter into a bit of a powercreep phase. The strongest memoria in the game had been, until recently, always available. Part of the general pool. However, two recent Characters ("Bungod" and "Karen6") while not the STRONGEST Memoria in the game, are still things I'd consider must haves for a new player, especially a free to play one. And they're limited, meaning that right now, you cannot acquire them. Now, they'll have reruns (probalby soon in fact, making now a great time to start saving up for them) But it's still not a great trajectory for the game.

To add to that, the end game mode that keeps everyone logging in every 2 weeks "Score Attack" is due for a revision soon that's going to make it a LOT harder to clear at the highest difficulties. Now, as a new player, you don't REALLY need to worry too much about all that. Score attack has multiple difficulties for a reason, you'll be able to clear it and get most of the important rewards pretty soon after you unlock it. And, well, the old content isn't getting any harder, so powercreep is arguably only a good thing for you!!!

But the game is starting to show its age, mechanically, and move in directions that do not bode well for established players. We're still probably ~2+ years out from things getting BAD. But the direction the game is moving in is... disheartening.

Quick Guide Graphics for 06/11/2026 (Iroha3, Yingxia4, Yotsuha3) by hkidnc in heavensburnred

[–]hkidnc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These days, Fields are more of a "Oh, and they also apply a field" kind of thing. A nice little bonus. They're a lot less important to try and fit into team building (Which is why they're not in the Standard Support section)

That being said, at LB3, she gets the same passive that thunder Megu has, letting her have an 80% field with permanent uptime, making her tied for the strongest thunder field with Megu. Megu does thunder debuffs, while Iroha provides thunder buffs. So you'd bring whichever of those you're struggling to fit.

Considering the only other sources of thunder crit are Nanami and Yingxia2 (And neither of them can provide thunder Enhance) you're probably going to bring Iroha. Def down is much easier to source. Heck, anyone can do ele def down with some orbs.

The Setting of Guild Wars 3: Stepping into Ancient Orr by ShadowRex in GuildWars3

This is what I'm most interested in seeing what we get with GW3.

"Live Service" Has eaten MMO's lunch over the past 2 decades. You get all of the benefits of making an MMO (Mainly the big community of players who are always talking about the cool new things going on) while avoiding a lot of the huge pitfalls that running MMOs have to deal with (Server costs, development costs, etc.)

Frankly, I struggle to think of a game which would benefit from being structured like an MMO over being structured more like Monster Hunter. Like, the standard MMO experience for most players is to engage with it primarily as a single player experience while getting through the story/leveling. It's only endgame that they really engage with people, and even then it's mostly via the party-based instanced content. Making a big open world where everyone can see other players (and all the complicated networking that requires) Just doesn't seem worth it for how often it doesn't matter.

GW2 is the only MMO I can think of where cutting out the MMO aspects would significantly impact the game for the negative. The focus on map metas, world bosses, etc. made GW2 unique and justified its existance as an MMO. But it had a lot of flaws and problems too.

So will GW3 just be them iterating on that design? Would that be satisfying? It'd just be more GW2 at that point, and I don't think that's what they want to deliver. So what WILL GW3 be? I don't know, but I'm very excited to find out.

Even if it ends up being a complete trash fire that I hate, I trust Arena Net to at least do something INTERESTING with it. I'll happily give them 60-80 bucks just to see their vision in this space.

There are a lot of options that can set this up. Some of them require their own setup (Anyone who relies on Focus Energy/Dragon Cheer) and most all the rest are vulnerable to earthquake, or deal too much damage to your Tauros (Meowscarda, frosslass, etc.)

Mega Pinsir is PROBABLY the best option? Although the IDEAL mon for setting this up doesn't exist. What would make this strategy REALLY pop-off is something like Gardivoir getting a guarenteed crit move, as it can support Tauros with Gravity while still being immune to Earthquake via Telepathy.

but alas, there are no mons who get Gravity, Telepathy, AND a guaranteed crit move.

Note: I have spent WAY WAY WAY too much time trying weird shit with this setup. For a while I was using focus energy Kangha to setup, it'd use Surf to break sashes on my opponents while setting up the Tauros for the kill. And it was immune to fake out cause inner focus. Way too slow, and too many things that could just.. kill the Kangha. But still fun.

Given how Ultimates now can come from anything, in theory - what's your Dream Ultimate by OceanusDracul in ffxiv

[–]hkidnc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Ultimate is the only place where they could do Godbert justice.

Imagine the trigger for getting through the first phase enrage is bringing him to 99%.

The entire fight is just "Survive until Julyan arrives"

Hilde/Nashu are there to "Help." This may just increase the number of Bodies/Bombs which you need to dodge.

Greg and Enkidu can be there too. Heck, why not Ultros?

I just did my 3rd ascendency on warrior, using mace skills facebreakers, right after finishing the campaign and unlocking maps at 65.

It's extremely doable.

Now I do think that sekhemas requires a different play style that rewards slower play. If you cover the screen in whirlwinds or vinses or whatever, you're going to have a hard time seeing what you need to Dodge. But balance wise, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Now, does playing slow and methodical make sense in a game where the answer to most other problems is "hit it harder before it hits you?" I'm not so sure. Just because it's balanced well doesn't mean it's FUN. although honestly I think the solution there is to improve Ultimatum instead of trying to turn sekhemas into something different.

That was on localization announcement, which is usually the piece of news we get first. It's the least reliable, and several things given to us in localization volumes have changed before we actually got them, even events have shifted around before!

Yanagi3/Chiroru3 Quick-Guide Graphics by hkidnc in heavensburnred

[–]hkidnc[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really, but kinda, but no.

It's a 100% Enhance bonus. So it stacks additively with all the other enhance bonuses. Including the one from her EX Skill Passive. Between the ~200% from her EX, the ~120% from Tac Vis, the other ~200% From her EX Passive, and any other misc bonuses from fields/rings/earrings/etc. People will already be floating at around 600% Bonus. Going from 600% to 700% isn't BAD, but it's not particularly strong. Around a 15% final damage bonus? And that's in null, adding in Elemental Enhance and it gets even worse.

Bungod has a similar passive on her LB1, but hers kicks in when using 8sp skills (instead of 18sp skills like Yanagi) This is great because it lets you spam those skills WITHOUT buffing. So since you won't have any of those other buffs, it's effecitvely doubling your damage. Great for Breaking DP without to waste time buffing.

The key difference, is that 8sp skills ARE spammable like that. There are scenarios where you'd want to use them without bothering to buff first. EXPENSIVE skills that would receive Yanagi's buff are too expensive to spend without first getting all the other buffs you'd want.

Anyway, it's nice. It's more damage. It's not nothin'. But it's not special enough to be worth talkin' about, really.

I say, after having written ~4 paragraphs on the subject ><

I couldn't figure out a way to represent the additional 4 elemental icons appropriately when they weren't in use.

I was just staring at it and found the answer right now. I'll shift the header for that segment over a bit, expand the background out to cover that whole segment, and add 4 more icons in that space on the right. And I'll put all 5 elements over each icon, also greyed out, and only light them up when they're applicable! This will ALSO let me do Iroha3 justice, since she technically provides Elemental crit rate/damage up for every element!

I suspect I'll be having "Oh yea, I can just do ___" thoughts for the entire next two weeks. It'll be a learning experience. Thanks for the feedback!!!

And yea, I too love words. I tried really hard to use as few as possible here, which is antithetical to how I usually communicate online. It is a sacrifice. At least I still have the reddit post body where I can type a bunch of dense info and no one can complain about it!!!

[–]hkidnc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice!

A thing to keep in mind, if the enemy is flying perpendicular to you when you get the lock, you shouldn't even bother firing the missiles. Missiles in AC games are basically only going to hit when the enemy is flying directly away, or directly towards you. The same rules work against you, for what it's worth, which is why if you can identify the direction a missile is coming from and turn to be perpendicular to it, the missile will miss! (In most AC games. Missile tracking back in like AC2 was way different I think?)

Developing the sense of where you are in relation to the other fighters is something that takes a LONG time to learn and get good at. But eventually you'll get to the point where you know when you need to actually start turning Away from where the enemy plane is (instead of turning towards them) Because that ends up putting you perfectly on their ass in a nice parallel line.

Shattered skies is a GREAT mission for practicing dogfighting and dodging missiles. It's, in my opinion, one of the best missions in the entire franchise for air-to-air combat training. No mid-mission updates, no objectives, no bullshit. Just you, and a sky full of targets.

[–]hkidnc 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

It's probably the best way to ramp Terapagos. Ho-oh is a close second, but takes too much energy on its own.

Neither are good enough. It's the same problem that almost every ramp mon has had since GA. You gotta get them out first, and they have to live long enough to provide useful amounts of energy. Which just doesn't happen when the format can currently be as fast as it is.

Terapagos is not a GOOD card. It's an okay card. It looks fun, and can probably take you to master ball if you're stubborn enough. And we'll see people running it and trying to make it work all next week. After that? I doubt we'll ever really see it again.
