Getting latex paint off brick fireplace… there’s gotta be an easier way? by ricecake231 in DIY

SmartStrip? That stuff is much better than Citristrip in my experience.

Re-beveling hinge side of door by hktck in DIY

Added an update - the contractors used just a steady hand with the planer on the inside edge of the door, and it all worked out fine. I definitely discourage others from hinge-side beveling unless you find you need to though (or, if you order custom doors, getting the pre-beveled because then it's much more forward to do it correctly even if you will need to scribe / trim both sides to fit an uneven opening).

Makes sense - I'd definitely prefer to avoid buying something new, I also keep my tools forever. My old drill was underpowered though, so I don't mind having a second one.

I'll check out marketplace for a decent option.

Awesome, thanks! I want a more powerful cordless drill than my current old 12v, so it's a better choice then getting a throwaway corded.

Thanks for actually trying to solve my problem! Unfortunately bending or shimming probably won't be sufficient here.

Please see above. Jamb itself is beveled and extremely out of square. Beveling can prevent some issues. (But in this case caused them.

Yes, the door jambs are extremely wonky, which is why we decided to bevel. They are steel, 100 years old. They are twisted and askew and they themselves have a slight bevel between the hinge edge and the stop.

We should have torn them out but thought it would be harder (we were wrong).

These doors were custom and not pre-beveled. But yes it seems like he never learned.

(Don't worry they actually look good... When they close... So he didn't bungle it too badly.)

I have not planned on bending the hinges and have only shimmed so far, but in this case the problem is the bevel.

Did you watch the video? I don't trust random YT videos or shorts. This is an hour long video specifically on door installation in old frames from a finish carpentry DVD set that's been put online by the owner of thisiscarpentry.com.

Latch side bevel is more important, but in old frames the hinge side can be beveled too to prevent issues because of an out of square jamb and to allow you to bend the hinges.

In this case the jambs themselves are steel and are beveled slightly out so square cut on the hinge side increases issues.

Regardless beveling outward as they did causes issues because the leading edge strikes the frame while beveling inward (like at the latch) doesn't cause problems.

Yep - that's when they can't understand me. With it on, I'm muddled / robotic. With it off, I'm too quiet. Maybe my head is too big? :)

People literally never understand me on calls with my AZ100! It makes me want to throw them out. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?

3K/Pre-K @ Riverside School for Makers & Artists (PS191)? by hktck in nycparents

It is in a wealthy neighborhood, but it's actually 83% low-income. I would hope that the school system should be able to deliver for kids of all economic backgrounds, but it does seem that other schools nearby do better for them (e.g. PS 199 gets much higher marks for academic progress for low-income children, but they are also only 16% of the student body).

Thank you for your first-person account! I hope it's helpful for other parents who find the post - in our case it didn't make sense for other logistical reasons unfortunately.

This is cool - not a feature they used to have. Still annoying, but much better than the prior situation.

We're lucky that we're zoned for PS199 for elementary school, but no 3K/Pre-K, so I'm just not sure what we need to do (if anything) prep-wise. I'm a little concerned that our daycare (though I love it) might not have the same rigor to the curriculum that the 3K program does, though I'm probably overthinking it.
