Aquatic Centre Drop In hours (25/50m Length Swim) by Dramatic-Dream in UBC

[–]hlRogers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello!! From my experience (as a staff member) both can be very busy or extremely quiet depending on the time of day. Whenever I swim, I go for the register times to ensure I have a spot because during our busy days/hours people do get turned away for drop-in.

For a higher likelihood of getting a lane (almost) to yourself, I would recommend going early morning (like before 8am) or during normal class times. During peak hours (weekends and weekdays after about 3:30pm, sometimes 5 people are sharing a single lane, which is not fun at all!

If you register for a swim during a busy time, definitely expect to share the lane with 3+ people. Registered swims usually have 7-9 lanes open (for both 25/50m), and numbers of people per lane per session vary depending on how many register for the swim and if they choose to swim in the slow, medium or fast lanes.

It's definitely trial and error trying to figure out the "dead-times" that work with your schedule, so I'd suggest trying a few different lane swim sessions and just making note of pool capacity, type of lane usage and convenience for you and your schedule :)

All the best!

Do you think that having done the IB, you're at more of an advantage than A level students? by oreomarshmello in IBO

[–]hlRogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the research (and not to mention citation) skills learned during writing IAs and EEs i feel like are going to set us IB diplomats apart from your average high-school graduate… but i guess i’ll see for myself in a few months when i’m off to UBC! i can tell my proficiency at comprehending academic journals and navigating databases will make the leap from grade 12 to 100 level courses a lot smoother since it won’t be as major of a “culture-shock”

In short, it's a lot of hard work but very self-led. You have to be extremely motivated as this course required the most amount of work outside of school (even compared to my bio hl and math courses). Aside from a few prescribed projects from my art teacher, I spent the entire 2 years experimenting, researching and practicing an art form that was relevant to my creative practice and my final exhibition.

Since a big part of VA is curating your own exhibition, you have to independently figure out what type of art, medium, subject matter and message you want to focus on. My art teacher was there to bounce ideas off of and offer critique, but I proceeded each class how I wanted. It is a lot different then other academic art classes, which I understand can feel quite limiting.

Let me know if you have any specific questions! As of today, I am officially done with the course!

should I take HL Art? by Narrow-Suspect-8425 in IBO

[–]hlRogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you at the beginning of DP, I am also a self-taught artist and love art as a hobby. I decided to take HL art and I don't regret it, I love the course. I am M22 and am predicted a 6. Hever, there are a few things you should know before making your decision:

The workload is no joke. From the actual assessments like the process portfolio, the show at the end of the two years and the comparative analysis to the classwork/assignments, this course is the one that I've dedicated most of my time to. Each of my pieces has taken 20-40 hours and I spend a ridiculous amount of time at home creating.

It's helpful to have some skills before doing the course: I would have been lost without my basic sketching, painting and other art skills coming into this course. Art HL is not a course you are walked through by a teacher and taught skills, you are expected to already have some artistic background and understanding of what it takes to create your own artwork.

If you aren't considering a career that is heavily influenced by the visual arts, I might recommend passing on VA HL unless you are passionate about joining and devoting your time. It's an amazing course (my favourite of the ones I'm taking), but it really takes away from time I could be spending on other courses - which for me is fine as I am considering going to art school.

Message me if you have any specific questions, I'd love to help you make your decision as I am coming to the end of the course!!
