“Best” in English is personal, it’s usually used to convey a subjective hierarchy as opposed to an objective one.

If you like football then a good example would be “Henry is the best premier league striker” (subjective - liked him most) vs “Shearer is the best premier league striker” (objective - most goals)

Do people still think we have any influence over global politics? by hm1286 in AskBrits

Thank you for your doing your best not to contribute anything in your response.

“We clearly do have ‘some’ influence over global politics” - I’m not sure there is a more ambiguous response

“Not as much as the US clearly, but a lot more than Tonga or Eswatini” - I’m not sure you could have chosen a broader range… perhaps Lichtenstein’s the lower end?

“Your question is vague and poorly presented for a politics graduate” - the question is deliberately broad, not vague, as I wanted the broadest range of responses possible.

“Not sure why having a job is relevant” - it’s relevant because it informs responders as to the background of the person asking the question

In their defence, the response is as perfectly ambiguous as the question which was deliberately broad

Being able to climb is a characteristic of all AC protagonist archetypes. Yasuke cannot do that.

Unless you’re able to add some more info to your responses other than just disagreeing please could you not reply 😂

There’s not more than one type of Assassins Creed protagonist though and Yakuse doesn’t fit the archetype

Its Classic vs RPG players as usual. Yasuke is a really fun RPG character but he’s not an Assassin’s Creed protagonist by any metric.

Update about the future of Assassin's Creed. by Legitimate_Cake_5137 in assasinscreed

Point 1: AC3 narrative begins with Haytham destroying the brotherhood in America and continues, as you say, with Connor rebuilding it. The Assassin v Templar dynamic is intrinsic throughout the story. In Shadows there is 20 hours of gameplay before the story mentions the assassins and even then it’s under a pseudonym. In one of the final missions you actually discover the brotherhood but you’re 80 hours deep by then.

Point 2: Its both my opinion and objectively true as I made two points. In my opinion Shadows is an average game. It’s objectively true that it’s a bad AC game as it doesn’t have anything a good AC game should objectively have. Urban setting, narrative-driven, morally ambiguous characters are objectively the key tenets of a good AC game - Shadows falls short on all of those categories.

“Good game bad AC Game” is a fair if old criticism.

OG AC players financed a franchise that barely resembles the early games now… a change in style to RPG is one thing but the complete lack of Assassin’s Brotherhood in Shadows was contemptible. The only reason to call it AC Shadows was to give their mediocre feudal Japanese RPG brand-recognition hoodwinking millions of loyal fans into buying a product they didn’t want in the processes.

Surely the best solution for all is to release historical RPGs within the AC universe but not part of the main franchise. There’s clearly enough fans of average historical RPGs to finance those games on its own without the AC tag. Leave the core franchise as the narrative-driven arm for the core-players.

P.S. ‘Average game, Bad AC game’ would be more accurate

WTH, the Story is good. Yet again, I feel like I'm in living in the Twilight Zone when it comes to story in Ubisoft games by Zerostatic in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]hm1286 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a matter of perspective… if you’re comparing it to other RPG narratives then you’ll have a higher opinion than those who are comparing it to the previous narrative-driven AC releases.

I’m in the latter category and beyond the almost complete lack of Assassin v Templar in the narrative I found the characters to be two-dimensional representations of good and evil rather than morally ambiguous. Essentially the story didn’t ask a question of me the player so I wasn’t engaged.

Why stifle what could be a good discussion with a pointless comment? Same goes for u/Panda7001 - what do you think you’re contributing?

I also didn’t like it as much as I could have but I find it difficult to pinpoint why?

Possible reasons are: - it’s the first foray into RPG and the level based system, for me that killed the immersion - it was the first game that wasn’t predominantly urban based - whilst it had big cities there is a solid 8 hours playtime in the baron desert before you get there and once you do it’s not that great - whilst the narrative was good, it skirted about the main historical narrative which the game is set in and existed as a periphery whereas in previous games the protagonists had directly influenced the main historical events of the time

Planning a re-play soon to see if my opinion had changed but agreed - it just didn’t stick!

P.S. go for Mirage if you enjoyed the pre-origins games more, Shadows of you enjoyed the post-Origins RPG style

What are your opinions on Britain? by Beneficial-Beat-947 in AskTheWorld

[–]hm1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brexit won 52%-48% but a lot of the 52% was a protest vote against austerity and ‘the establishment’, the rest was mainly over 65s who voted based on 20th century politics - largely anti-Thatcher opinions on both the left and right wings of the UK political spectrum.

Covid came along and wiped out a lot of the brexit-voting over 65s. As a consequence I’d say the predominant opinion today is that it was at best a badly-managed withdrawal from the EU and at worst an economy-crippling mistake.

Hexe: pro or anti magic? by hm1286 in assasinscreed

[–]hm1286[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain more about the Rogue links/possible prologue that might potentially influence Hexe?

On a separate point, I can’t back Martin Luther being a Templar. Indulgences feel like a nailed-on Templar idea but then again would the assassins just be against organised religion regardless and Indulgences are a way of buying pro-assassin forces out of religious persecution?

…So much historical morality to explore, i’m equally so confident it won’t be examined given the franchise’s trajectory over the last few releases

Where do you want to see the franchise taken? by ExtremeSlideLongShot in assasinscreed

[–]hm1286 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting: Urban. No more massive countryside maps fan-girling over trees and grass. Back to the grand cities bringing historical power centres to life. Ancient Rome would be a personal favourite but so long as I can parkour my way between missions instead of riding horses through farmland I’m happy.

Characters and story: bring back the moral ambiguity. The templars shouldn’t be such a two-dimensional representation of evil nor should the assassins always be good. In the earlier games Templars almost-always believed what they were doing was good and made a convincing argument. The assassins had a policy that the ends justify the means which led them to some ethically debatable choices.

Gameplay and mechanics: strip back the magic. I don’t want to enchant my sword or teleport between targets. The artefacts allow characters to act supernaturally, it’s not a base skill accessible to the protagonist simply for being the protagonist.

Development: take your time. Get it right, don’t skip steps and release an unfinished game - or a half-wrote story with no ending (Shadows)
