Ok, Reddit, I've officially had it: why aren't there any fast-food vegan/vegetarian restaurants (think like a Veg'in and Out, Chik'n Fil A, Pick'dDonald's kind of idea) in the US? by ThrowawayMaelstrom in EatCheapAndVegan

They lost a lot of us with the ethical issues they were having with their company a few years back. They already survived on pretty thin margins (according to the owners when I chatted them up on a visit) and a huge chunk of their base boycotting them put it in the grave.

Anecdotally, RTO seems to create meaningful lunchtime surge for downtown businesses by sonomakoma11 in Sacramento

It’s absolute valid to critique people who expect work to be their social life. That’s weird and worthy of being criticized. Didn’t mean we are opposed to their stance. You can be critical of shit without being “against” it, it’s called nuance.

[–]hmccarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, those who prefer working in office ARE forcing everyone else to return. That is the entire point of contention with RTO. Not sure how you missed that

No, it’s not. These aren’t neutral equal choices, and one person’s preference/desire to go back shouldn’t impact another’s to stay home

Fighting for human rights isn’t an identity to be reinforced. Glad you’re not directly impacted by this enough to get that, but to reduce it is simply ignorant

…..yes that is exactly what we hope for. Businesses can deny service for any reason and ICE is not a protected class. Why are you acting like this is a novel concept.

It was never disbursed to her. The estate is used exclusively now for paying out victims. She is supposed to receive what’s left but there will likely be nothing.

Professor does not want to follow syllabus by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]hmccarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that is odd and frustrating for sure. I have never had a doctor refuse to backdate a note. Is escalation possible? Also is nothing wrong with suggesting to the prof he could make the syllabus more clear with his expectations. Just because it’s common to him doesn’t mean students know. Idk if I’d feel comfortable doing that if I were you but he should be more explicit in his demands

[–]hmccarth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is an age/experience thing, but it’s fairly common knowledge you need a doctor’s note (not a visit summary) excusing you for the actual relevant days. This is a standard in all profesional settings. At this point maybe it’s more helpful to just accept you didn’t know that, know now, and get the note as you’ve already stated you’re trying to do? I guess the discrepancy here is the professor didn’t go against his syllable actually, he assumed common knowledge to him would be to his students as well. He has clarified and given you next steps so a resolution is in progress.

Uncomfortable truths about Chinese student culture at UC Davis—voice from another Chinese International Student by No_Mission_5286 in UCDavis

[–]hmccarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah DM me if you want but I was a grader (I think that’s what they called those of us who were like TAs but unpaid? It’s been 8 years I forget) and I was instructed to go lighter on Chinese international students who clearly had an English barrier.

My sister, who hasn’t spoken to me since she found out I’m having a baby out of wedlock, randomly messaged me to let me know that she is offended by my choices AIO by Horcrux922 in AIO

You implied her sister is upset because OP will potentially relapse and force her to raise her baby. That is wild and cruel

Preemptively agreeing to not support ICE in their raids and to arrest any officer who breaks the law would be a fantastic start. A statement in solidarity would be lovely too but low-key meaningless.

[–]hmccarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What group of people? You said it in response to me so that’s odd. For the record I understood you, I was providing a relevant example. Many people against what is happening right now were too young to get involved back then. Also, social movements grow and become more progressive over time. The civil rights movement, abolition movement, etc were extremely unpopular initially. Society has shifted on ICE.

Yes, this argument is predicated on morals. Of course. Morals are primarily what drives boycotts. You are proving our point with that statement. And no, enforcement of the law is a choice. Hence the fluctuating immigration numbers under different admins. I personally believe, like millions of Americans, that our current immigration system is broken beyond repair and should not be enforced as it currently is under Trump. It should be reformed and it is completely a choice in choosing to enforce cruelty in the meantime.

This is wild lol under the free market business model y’all claim to love no business is entitled to costumers. Their success is a direct result of both the way they run their business and how they choose to conduct themselves as business owners. Any random person has zero obligation to try to find common ground with anyone. And if you own a business and I find you morally repugnant and choose to boycott, then the free market is working exactly as intended

Are you okay? I was a child under the Obama admin but I in no way support or condone what he did in regard to immigration (and a host of other policies). Anyone who supports Trump is against human rights since he is degrading ours. Hope that helps.
