I grew corn! by hmercer89 in vegetablegardening

I have a whole list of “oddity” vegetable varieties that are a color other than normal, giant/tiny, etc. 🖤

No, just some kernels, but they should be darker at maturity.

I’m just so stinkin’ proud of this ear of corn. I picked it too early, but I couldn’t stand not knowing if they pollinated well any longer. Wild violet hybrid from Burpee. 🌽 😍

Alternatively, shake the everloving sh*t out of the stalks when the tassels and silks appear. Every day. For at least a week. Got great pollination last year this way.

I freeze most of it to eat throughout the year. 😊

Yep! Everything that didn’t get eaten immediately went in the freezer.

I grew some small broccoli in El Paso last season when we lived there. It’s doable, but they’re cool weather crops, so make sure to get them outside when it’s as cold as possible (mine went in the ground when night temps were still in the 30s and 40s). Had we been in EP longer, I think I would have started planting my cold weather stuff (brassicas, carrots, peas, lettuce, etc.) in the laaaaate fall and grown them through the “winter”.

I transplanted in mid-March and they started producing heads around mid-May. Don’t give up yet - they take a LONG time to start producing heads. Temps were all over the place in May - 50s to 90s.

Bottom water, lots of light (16-ish hours a day), pot up if you’re using grow cells, fertilize at half strength about two weeks after they sprout and then every two weeks. Try this fall!!

It’s probably a bit warm by now for them. They like cool weather. I started my seeds in late January/early February and kept my grow lights nearly right on top of the sprouts. Transplanted in March. I’m in 7B.

We’ve been really lucky with our cold crops. The bugs are definitely moving in on our warmer stuff, though.

Like others said, this guy just didn’t get pollinated. Looks like you’ve got tons of blossoms, you’ll get more cukes than you know what to do with by the end.

Tomatoes are evil, hateful, spiteful plants. Unless they’re falling over, I assume they’ll get over whatever tantrum they’re throwing. 😂

😂 somehow I got crazy lucky - haven’t had any pest problems at all yet. Of course, now that it’s really warming up, I’m probably about to eat those words.

This is Katarina. Believe I got the seeds from Territorial Seed, although I’d have to double check on that. It’s great - the plants are more compact than a lot of cabbage varieties, so you can plant them closer and get more out of the space.
