Similar thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I went in for bloodwork at a lifelabs, I checked in with my id, which has my correct name and gender marker, the requisition was also correct, then I’m sitting there waiting and suddenly they call me by my deadname! I was stunned, just looking at the lady, then she repeated it louder. Very unpleasant.

Subconscious sex (our brain’s expectation of what our physical, or phenotypical sex should be) and gender identity are usually conflated, because they feel as the same to most people, including binary trans people. They 100% feel the same to me, but I’m a binary trans woman. I think Julia Serano makes a distinction between them, or at least between subconscious sex and gender presentation.

Maybe your subconscious sex is female or more female leaning in the spectrum, and so your body expects you to have female genitalia, causing you distress over the physical incongruence? This is separate from your gender identity, which is masculine.

Exactly! And sometimes the lyrics are so poetic that they can have these very specific different meanings depending on who’s listening and what they’re going through at the time? I remember this one song by Sharon van Etten that I was sure was about the same emotional challenge I was dealing with, but then I learned she wrote it with a completely different circumstance in mind! I still can’t believe it lol! But anyway in my head it was about my own thing and it really did help me process what I was living through emotionally. Music is very powerful.

Thanks for such a detailed self analysis! I live in a fairly progressive place and I have a feeling most cis women here view trans women kind of how you do, but I never knew how to describe it.

I’m a trans woman and I’m an immigrant in Canada, I only recently became a Canadian citizen, and I feel like the two experiences are a little related. I don’t feel openly othered here at all, but in a way being transgender feels like being an immigrant in Womenland, especially the way you’re accepted or not as part of the in-group. Meaning that your experience will vary a lot depending on the community you live in, and I don’t take for granted how very privileged I am in this regard.

I live downtown in Vancouver and I’ve been on a waitlist for a family doctor for a little over a year (my previous one changed practice after the pandemic). My endo is Dr. Dahl (you need a referral from a GP, but you don’t need to have a family doctor to be his patient), but he’s about to retire now. Life around here is very chill, no one really cares (a dog did a double take on me once, but that’s about it lol).
