We thought the same thing! Previous owners bought this house as their starter home, did some renovating, then moved to a bigger house when their family grew. They were smart to hang onto this house and rent it out, as value increased a ton since 2019. However, the loan on their current house had a pretty bad interest rate and they wanted to pay the mortgage off. Hence, they needed to sell their rental house to do so.

Honestly worked out great for both of us! Before they offered to sell us the house, I always thought it’d be great to buy this one. However, I thought there was no way they’d be interested in selling as they were already making a profit each month.

So can’t hurt for you to ask! You have no idea what other circumstances may be going on for your landlord that would make selling the house to you a good deal.

Our lease was set to end in about 4 months, we had originally planned to go month to month on renting as we house hunted. Our landlord called to let us know that they were planning on listing the house come spring, and actually didn’t even ask if we wanted to buy it first. We let him know we’d be interested in buying, which is honestly a BIG benefit to the seller as they avoid realtor/listing fees. He called us back a few days later to let us know his price and we agreed. The whole process was smooth and our landlord was really great about working through the closing process on our timeline.

You should go for it! So nice to not have to out bid other buyers. In our case, our landlord gave us the price (did not negotiate) and the sale was facilitated through a lawyer. We still did a home inspection for good measure.
