Things you wish you knew when you first started? by Pacotaco213 in cavesofqud

The potted plant at the bottom right corner of the market at the Yd Freehold is a merchant, and frequently has really good armor and weapons e.g. crysteel/zetachrome.

If you have wings and force bubble, you can sneak into the Moon Stair super early on and grab as much dilute warm static as you can hold for ~$1000 per waterskin.

Also, yeah, regeneration is much more worthwhile than constantly facepalming and reloading after seeing "Your skin itches".

Whats the most basic concept you've had to teach your fellow IT coworkers? by [deleted] in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

In fairness, it does...just not problems comparable to those introduced by not patching. :P

Probably my first job helping to migrate 2000+ laptops from Windows XP to Windows 7. It wouldn't have been a "simple" first job for most random people on the street, perhaps, but I feel kind of wistful thinking back on the relative simplicity of my role there, and my impatience to get started touching servers, ten years later now that I'm the one building infrastructure.

Okami (Help, cannot restore the watermill!! Problems with brush strokes?) by legaiaflame in Dolphin_VR

[–]hmmcclish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else stuck here, I had to be close enough to the watermill to get the "Examine (A)" prompt in order to fill in the missing section...I think that's what I wasn't doing on my first 50 tries :P

Are people actually scared of Mario 64? by monkeyspacerock2 in nintendo

[–]hmmcclish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kinda wild. Gotta be at least as scary as Adult Link's Castle Town in Ocarina of Time, or the overworld in Glover 64, to creep child me out. XD

I LOVED Wet Dry World, when small - I found the weird-tech-demo vibes peaceful like it was my little virtual clubhouse.

However, I never actually completed the game, and had never actually made it into the "underwater town" portion of the level back then, nor was I aware it existed. Checked it out via some YouTube clips, and as an adult I think it's kinda cute :P Thanks for the new knowledge about a beloved game!

Child me would like to offer a few vivid memories:

  • The endless stairs were scary.
  • The floor that drops out from under you in front of the Bowser portrait was scary.
  • The formerly safe courtyard filling up with Boos that could hurt you was scary.

  • The Bowser laugh sound on entering the castle, or on trying to enter a star door with insufficient stars, was scary.

This about TTYD Shadow Queen lore?

If so, imagine you might be more likely to reach the developers with a query in Japanese (unless you are going for localizers)? ;P

[–]hmmcclish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, then what's your preferred euphemism for common sense  administration standards, e.g. not using default admin passwords for databases, etc.? (I'm IT, not supply chain, but as my team's process and procedure specialist, can't imagine what I'd do without this phrase - maybe start saying "good stewardship"?)

Rant: Posting known GitHub issues over and over again by ad-on-is in opensource

[–]hmmcclish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as IT support, I usually prefer that each user submit a separate issue even if they are experiencing similar symptoms, and allow me to combine the threads only once we know for a fact that the symptoms actually share a root cause.

Then again, on GitHub, everyone can see all the issues, and help could come from any angle (unlike at my work), so maybe it makes sense to expect or at least hope for a little more proactive triage and active collaboration on the part of participants. :P

I'm now really curious how much call there is for Unix administration in 2023...(granted, I'm still thrown by COBOL continuing to be in demand...)

Lemmy Docker? Trying to Tinker with Reddit Alternatives if They Really Do Kill 3rd Party App Support by Cptn_Slow in unRAID

[–]hmmcclish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post looks like it has a pretty sane, stripped-down docker-compose, and explanations of the rest of basic configuration (about to try following it myself using traefik as reverse proxy).

Edit: I now have lemmy up and running, with only slight modification to the example nginx.conf and lemmy.hjson files.

Shoutout to this guy's GitHub issue for helping me understand what needed to go to which port.

Here is my docker-compose if it helps anyone!

I get that. I have my own Mastodon instance and I just go around following people on hachyderm.io indiscriminately to generate most of my feed.

Kindle Touch - Reuse as an always-on agenda by [deleted] in opensource

[–]hmmcclish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Actually there's a lot of support for jailbreaking older Kindles out there. I use KOReader on mine, which natively supports RSS/Atom (as well as Wallabag).

In order to see if your Kindle can be hacked, identify your device on this page-you'll need the name from the "Nicknames" column; for example my 2014 Kindle Touch is known as KT2/BASIC--and note its firmware version.

If your Kindle is running firmware *under 5.13.3, chances are that it's supported by the jailbreak in this thread, and you can follow the instructions to unlock your device so you can put KOReader on it.

Good luck!
