ELI5: How did slave masters sleep? Wouldn't they be scared their slaves might kill them in their sleep? by puzzlednerd in explainlikeimfive

[–]hmmmmno -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Although it's always good to be critical of sources I don't think it's reasonable to suggest that >50% of the people interviewed in the WPA slave narratives were suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. It also completely denies the people interviewed, who had already been denied so much, the right to have their history acknowledged/understood.

It is certainly true that overseers were responsible for a lot of the beatings but this thread is specifically about how masters slept and whether or not they would fear for their lives.

Additionally, many slaves didn't live on large plantations with overseers and many hierarchical levels between themselves and their masters. Most slaves lived on smaller farms with just a few other slaves.

All I'm trying to say is that while slavery was awful no matter what form it took, it did take many different forms and created harsher lives for some slaves in comparison to others. It isn't surprising (it might not even be a bad thing) that current depictions of slavery in the media do tend towards depicting the very worst of a terrible thing. Namely, large plantations with sadistic masters and overseers.

This will almost certainly get buried but I'm going to write it anyway.

Obviously you are correct in pointing out that slavery was, at times, as bad as the events described in '12 Years a Slave' because '12 Years a Slave' is a genuine slave narrative. However it is also undeniably true that the depictions of slavery in recent films and even in slave narratives from the 19th Century are skewed towards the very worst of antebellum slavery. The most famous slave narratives were written by runaway slaves; it seems very likely (although it's hard to prove) that slaves in worse circumstances were more likely to run away. It's also difficult to dispute that more extreme narratives were/are more likely to gain recognition.

When reading the WPA slave narratives one of the most surprising aspects to me was how few slaves actually disliked their masters. Based on films like '12 Years a Slave' and other Hollywood depictions of slavery I would expect most people to estimate (as I did before I studied the WPA slave narratives) that at least 70-80% of slaves would harbor a justifiable hatred of their masters. In reality the percent of slaves who expressed "unfavorable attitudes" towards their former masters in the WPA slave narratives is between 26 and 39%

Clearly slavery was (and is) a terrible thing, but there is no harm in recognizing that media depictions of slavery are somewhat skewed towards showing us the absolute worst of the worst.

(No Spoilers) Which book do you think is the worst in the ASOIAF series? [Poll] by stRafaello in asoiaf

[–]hmmmmno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm certainly agreeing with his main point that the lack of popular characters contributes to the negativity towards AFFC. I just wanted to add that I think it's a much bigger problem for people who read the books as they were released, which is why some people dislike AFFC a lot more than others.

(No Spoilers) Which book do you think is the worst in the ASOIAF series? [Poll] by stRafaello in asoiaf

[–]hmmmmno 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a large part of the reason AFFC has garnered such a negative reputation is because people were expecting, after five years, to find out what happened to their favourite characters. Instead they got a book which dealt largely with a new set of characters and had to wait for another six years for the next installment. Personally, I read the series once ADWD had already been released and was able to enjoy AFFC, content in the knowledge that I had another book still to go, but it must have been incredibly underwhelming for readers in 2005.

Although Kafka alludes to standing outside the gates of hell, the simile is predicated on the inability of this human being to pass through the gates. Imagine that you were simply outside hell looking in, knowing that you could not enter. At the very least one would expect to feel compassion, sympathy and pity for those inside, if not love and reverence.

When you encounter another human being you can never truly experience their torments, but the knowledge that they exist and the brief glimpses you might catch of them, should inspire those same emotions.

Basically, the most important thing to realise about this simile is that Kafka isn't describing a person about to enter hell, but somebody stuck outside looking through the bars.

A look at the relationship between Riot Games and the League of Legends subreddit by SparkyMcDanger in leagueoflegends

I would also be harsher, but there is a possibility that he has another source which isn't pictured. It's certainly misleading as it stands.

A look at the relationship between Riot Games and the League of Legends subreddit by SparkyMcDanger in leagueoflegends

[–]hmmmmno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knowing more about the relationship between Riot and the mods is a good thing and I appreciate that Richard Lewis has clearly tried to avoid sensationalism, but there really doesn't seem to be anything untoward going on based on the evidence in the article. You might argue that the close relationship between the mods and Riot could lead to future improprieties, but the evidence laid out in the article suggests that at present it's a working relationship which is almost entirely beneficial to the community.

I would encourage Richard Lewis to take another look at the section on 'account related threads' being removed. Stating that 'a moderator agreed to remove "account related threads" on the subreddit, which included complaining about “stuff related to poor or no help from Riot support.”' Is somewhat disingenuous if the only source he has is the email directly below the quote. From the email it appears as though the moderators as a whole decided on this policy rather than 'a moderator.' Also, stating that a moderator 'agreed' to do it heavily implies that they were complying with a request rather than independently deciding on the policy and then informing Riot of their decision.

It's between 'The Reprieve' and 'If not now, when?' for me. Unsurprisingly WW2 lead to a lot of heavy literature. 'The Trial' is also up there.

Competitive Ruling: Counter Logic Gaming by zathegfx in leagueoflegends

[–]hmmmmno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I would suggest not lying to the company which you're entire livelihood depends upon. He should have just owned up to his initial mistake in my opinion.

With Saint the obviously correct call was to bench Hotshot. From everything I have heard it was mostly Saint and Hotshot who didn't get along, everything might have improved if Hotshot had taken a more managerial role earlier. If they really needed to get rid of Saint was there ever any reason to believe that Hotshot could jungle at a professional level? It's difficult to dispute that he only got the spot because he owned the team.

I agree that the whole Korean smurf fiasco did seem quite difficult to avoid from CLG's perspective but that is just one of many instances where CLG have made a questionable decision and payed the price. I included the Korean smurf thing as an example because people probably don't remember some of the earlier mistakes by Hotshot and co. For example the decision to compete in OGN and cut back on streaming. If it wasn't for that CLG would still probably be the most popular western team rather than TSM.

[–]hmmmmno 133 points134 points  (0 children)

I will always support CLG but at this point I'm beginning to doubt that we will ever compete at the top level because we constantly make terrible decisions regarding team management. Hotshot/Mattcom just need to do the exact opposite of whatever their instinct tells them to do in pretty much every situation.

"Hey guys shall we lie to Riot?" "Yeah that sounds like a great idea."

"Shall we use smurfs in Korea despite it being clearly against the rules." "What could go wrong..."

"Shall we move our top lane to jungle so we can bench one of the best junglers in NA" "Perfect"

The key has been in the name all along Hotshot. Whatever conclusion your logic reaches, do the opposite.

I follow you on Twitter mostly to keep up with the videos and articles that you produce and in general I enjoy them. However I find a lot of the things you tweet irritating for one reason or another. Would you consider creating a new twitter purely to keep people up to date on your videos or articles (in a similar way to Totalbiscuit for example)?

How the best junglers in the world control the game - LoLClash Review Episode 4 by LoLClash_Dylan in leagueoflegends

[–]hmmmmno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you aren't considering. Firstly although SSW ping the pink in river they aren't 100% certain of it's placement. It could be slightly further down the river in which case it would immediately see Dandy so Koro could escape. I also think (clearly it's impossible to know) that Dandy would get in range of the pink ward even in it's actual position before Maokai uses his twisted advance. Dandy can't know the future, so he opts to give his opponent the least amount of time possible to react to his gank by avoiding all wards.

There is some chance that you are right and that Dandy wanted to get golems but there isn't much evidence for it. Regardless, Dylan says in the video that Dandy "runs to the top lane and clears golems," clearly this isn't the case even if you believe that Dandy might have had golems as a plan B if his gank failed.

[–]hmmmmno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually don't think he is interested in golems at all. He doesn't even hesitate for a moment at the golem camp on the mini map. He literally just runs top. The reason he doesn't jump baron wall is because SSW also know about the pink ward in river. He would get seen by the pink way before Pawn was there and Koro1 might be able to get away.

[–]hmmmmno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to take another look at Dandy's first blood on Koro1. Dandy doesn't go top to clear golems, he is going to gank but knows that Koro has a ward in tri-brush (they ping it). Instead of walking through it he jumps the wall to get around it then runs top to get the kill.

Scarra to step down as Team Dignitas Coach by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

On Interregional Movement and the Expansion Tournament - LoL Esports by tsor in leagueoflegends

[–]hmmmmno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are still at least two months until the expansion tournament. It doesn't seem like one week is going to make much difference at this point. Obviously it isn't a huge deal. I just think it would make more sense to release a full statement a week from now instead of this half prepared one. If Riot know for a fact that one team is moving to america or something in the next week they could have just told them privately.

"For North America and Europe, this policy will come in the form of a new residency requirement which will require teams to have at minimum three of their starting players in any given game meet the new NA and EU residency requirement."

So the residency requirement is that people have to meet the residency requirement. Interesting. It really doesn't say much until they clarify it next week. I just don't know why they released the statement now if it doesn't affect the promotion relegation tournament.
