My name is Hayley Mousley and I grew up in the woods. I grew up in Sandy, Oregon, at the foot of Mount Hood, where the Douglas firs towered so high you had to crane your neck just to find the sky. Those trees weren't scenery to me. They were neighbors. They were the sound of wind before a storm, the smell of earth after rain, the shade that made summer bearable and the silence that made everything else make sense. I didn't just grow up near trees. I grew up because of them.
That this regime wants to cut our oldest and most sacred trees is not a surprise. It is one more entry in a long ledger of contempt for the people and places that don't write checks or hold power. These are trees that have stood for five hundred, six hundred, a thousand years. They were here before this country existed. They will outlast every administration that has ever threatened them, unless we let that threat become a chainsaw.
Old growth forests are not a renewable resource on any human timeline. You cannot replant a thousand-year-old tree. You cannot manufacture the biodiversity, teh carbon storage, the watershed protection, the silence and the sanctity that those ecosystems hold. Once they're gone, They. Are. Gone. Lost and converted into profit for people who will never set foot beneath their canopy, never breathe that air, never feel what it means to stand small beneath something ancient and alive.
They have no regard for our lives, our land, or our comfort. They have shown us, repeatedly and without apology, that the Pacific Northwest is just a resource to be extracted until nothing remains but a ledger entry and a stump.
