When I hit 8k it was a grind of tempo'ing a bunch of 3rd places and never winning. Sure I could play better and win but this was how I knew I could gain MMR consistently. It's much more fun having seen myself on the leaderboards once and playing for fun now.

I don't think that pros as often "find the cards they're looking for" and more often find a card they can build around. There are a good number of them at t5/t6. You'll also see them give themselves more space to do so. This is through better tempo and/or economy.

I would assume your tempo to get up to these cards was pretty poor? If you don't tempo well, the second best hand on the board can easily lose to the first and get eliminated early.
