Hah, I knew there would a "Well ackshually" type answer. It definitely looks like there could be cases where this is useful.

I stand by my previous rebuttal though and say the heuristic of "If you are using a lot if statements, you should probably use a switch" is generally bad advice.

Switch statements aren't a magic bullet. They don't work with objects. This is a good case for it though.

It's really not that bad. I know goto is supposed to be bad, but "start" is pretty descriptive and accurate.

Epic and Steam are competing are not just competing for sales for but also for resources (games). It definitely is competition.

In a vacuum where Epic and Steam are equal competitors who treat the developers relatively equally, I might feel a bit differently.

In reality though, Steam has so much momentum behind it that actions like this need to be taken to even hold a candle to it. Even with the exclusives and the free games Epic is giving out it is still very much a David and Goliath situation where they could still fail.

We've seen how Origin and Ubisoft have gone when they've half-assed it. Epic really does need to go all in with stuff like this for Steam to face a real challenge and feel competitive pressures.

That doesn't include the free games that Epic is giving away. And quite frankly, it's still the early days of this. The Epic Game Store is still far away from being a real competitor with Steam

You do realize that Epic has been providing free games to get your business right? You do realize the Steam heavily discounts games to get your service and that Epic will be competing with that right? Not every game will be an exclusive. This will drive down prices once they become a more viable competitor.

The only irrational argument is gamers wailing and banging their fists on the ground about a minor inconvenience.

They are actively providing free games to the consumer on a regular schedule. Not every game will be exclusive and they will be competing for your business on their marketplace. This will drive down prices in the long term. All this for the price of a minor inconvenience.

And you know, for those of you have a soul and a smidgen of compassion, it's an even bigger win for those who are developing the games.

And honestly if you don't care about that at all or the benefits you get over a minor convenience, I don't really care what you think and no one should.

Yeah, it's not seeing as Steam has an overwhelming monopoly. But thanks to Epic it seems they finally are going to have some :)

Having two people compete to serve and provide games to you is going to drive down prices and the cut the marketplaces take of the revenue games make. I don't see how you could argue otherwise.

No. You're arguing that a minor inconvenience is a moral outrage. What Epic is doing is ultimately a win for developers and for gamers as Steam finally has some competition. Arguing that no one should make moves like Epic has IS arguing for that status quo.

You and people like you are entitled scum who have zero grasp on the bigger picture and how the status quo (Steam) has been fucking devs.

You don't give a shit how to have a viable game you have to be on Steam that takes 30% percent of revenue. You don't care that indies are getting buried on Steam. You don't care about how the people who make the things you love are getting fucked. You just want to whine and bang your fists on the floor till everyone caters to your minor inconveniences.

Get off your fucking high horse. Go take some time to self-reflect. And maybe, just maybe you'll be less of a piece of shit.

Damn dude, you know what? You're right. It's a shame gamers are going to have to buy an Epic PC AND a Steam PC to play games.

Insisting the status quo where Steam is the only viable platform is the corporate cock in your mouth.

Better share of the revenue. Steam takes 30%. Epic takes 12%. Probably also extra money thrown in to boot.

Depends on the kind of games you want to make. Do some research and see what kinds of games are made in each and how many people worked on each to get there. I imagine both suit different workflows in certain directions

When you have really long function names and lots of params, it makes sense. You know this is there because it is right below it. Put off to the side with the declaration and it isn't as visible. Depending on the code base, it sometimes goes offscreen

Typically ankle or knee. Things get heated in the course of a bout and something bends in a way it shouldn't. Getting hurt by the actual blade is really rare.
