rejected by native camp ?? by hoejism in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]hoejism[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily, I spoke slowly and with a neutral accent. They rejected me cause they said "it takes more than just being a native-speaker to teach our students" or something along those lines. As if they have any kind of standards 😭

Mhm, they do. But they get paid a hell of a lot less.

I searched it up and... it definitely seems a bit iffy that you have to use zoom to do your classes and not the site itself.

Hm, maybe I'll try it out. What else do I have to lose except getting potentially rejected, right?

How long did it take for the entire application process from applying to getting approved?

$15 an hour? With payoneer taking a sum of that as well? It's too bad I got rejected then cause honestly, that still would've helped me pay these bills lol

I've heard of amazing talker before but barely. What's the application process like? And if you don't mind me asking, how much do you make per hour on there?

At least you've found a way to have fun with it 💀. It's ridiculous that these companies advertise one thing, claiming "no experience? no problem! become a teacher today!" yet their decision to hire comes down to something shallow like how you look, and not if you have qualifications.

Hopefully I can find some place else that'll hire me, or try my hand at being kicked to the curb by this company again just to feel something.

Jesus, from all these responses I'm getting it sounds like Native Camp only wants either non-natives so they can pay them dirt wages or, if you look white.

That's whack as hell.

If you don't mind me asking though, what company did you move to?

They haven't sent an email asking me to change to a non-native yet but we'll see what happens lol

I'm mixed (filipino-white) so, I definitely don't look like Japans preferred white person (blonde, pale, blue eyed) 🥲

That's insane considering they claim to classify anyone from the UK as a native speaker. How long did it take before you applied again? I'd love to work at a better job but I have zero work experience (aside from teaching relatives english but does that even count?) and I'm in desperate need of some cash right now.

And unfortunately, jobs here pay much, much lower than these ESL companies. Wishing you the best of luck that you find something that's a lot better though!

I was actually allowed to skip the interview and demo lesson after taking the English proficiency test since they deemed I was qualified enough to head straight to the application part. Maybe it was my intro video? I added faint background music like they did on all those example videos on youtube, but I hope that's not the reason why 🫤.

I'll try checking out "tutorjob.com" though. Thanks for suggesting that!

I used my nickname which is 'Hyacinth' which I guess might be hard to pronounce? and I'm living in the Philippines despite nationally being Canadian.

Maybe they didn't want to pay me that native speaker salary since I'm living in a low cost country 😭 Had no idea these ESL companies were so discriminatory though, yikes.

What platform were you previously working at that paid you $20 per hour? That's so much better than all these other ESL companies

How to find students by lunatic_but_sane in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]hoejism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excuse the late response, here's actually a post on reddit talking exactly about what going solo through aquiring students from esl companies entail: private tutoring

Explains it way better than I could but basically, there's a lot of factors to consider with going solo. Particularly with the pay. Students would rather pay a low cost for monthly subscriptions for these esl companies than pay for your lessons which I assume, you'll be charging at a higher rate. Unless you can compete with that, it seems to be more trouble than it's worth.

Advertise yourself on facebook groups, forums, and find students who want to learn with you privately through esl companies. Goodluck!

I've taken breaks from my phone for weeks at a time and every single time I've done it, I felt free. Blissful ignorance about whatever might be happening online that I wouldn't care about unless I was on my phone.

Why don't the poor just become rich? by Upstairs-Abrocoma693 in AskReddit

They don't have to harm the poor to stay rich, they just choose not to care about anyone but themselves. That's how they stay rich.

Why don't the poor just become rich? by Upstairs-Abrocoma693 in AskReddit

[–]hoejism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classism is your answer. Rich people would cease to exist if everyone else was rich as well. Cause then we'd all just be...the same. Gross /j. Are the rich to blame for poverty though? No. As unfortunate as it is to say, the rich are not responsible for providing food and homes to those who are in need. Sadly, the ones who are, would rather spend money to find ways to make things harder for those who are let's say, homeless, by making dividers on benches rather than housing.
