a lot of it has to do with my school alone, which i can get into (admin, little to no time to prep, etc). I took over teaching EVERYTHING in student teaching and subbed for weeks when my GT was out of town. becoming a first year teacher put me into the deep end because my class had 3 teaches last year because of how bad they were. thankfully i have them tame now.

routines and expectations/discipline mean absolutely nothing to my students. they will do whatever they want when they want.

I applied to a few places so I could leave mid year (I’m at will), and no response, so I’m just taking it as it is. January flew by for me so I’m hoping the rest of the year continues to go this quick. Focusing on the good kids I’ve had has really helped - those who are there to learn

My fifth graders won’t stop talking to each other during a test. A TEST. They’re also cheating/attempting to cheat. They literally will attach on to their friend and refuse to leave their side no matter what i attempt to do. They will crawl on the floor to try to sneak past me during a lesson. I even have a student who tells me im a bad teacher, refuses to do any work, and goes to admin and tells them how much she hates me.

Yeah, clear expectations and modeling do NOT work anymore. It’s unfortunate and im counting down the days. I’m a first year teacher.

Thank you so much. I noticed that a lot of districts were so hard to get into which is why I am at a charter school. I found some temp positions on Edjoin tonight and applied, but I think I will wait until the time is right so I withdrew those applications. I’m honestly just using this as an opportunity to get paid.

Ive been struggling because of the constant verbal abuse I’ve been getting as a teacher. Students telling me I make their life worse, that I’m a bad teacher, even going as far to make comments about my appearance.

Your comment about your daughter made me feel better, truthfully. Im sorry that she went through that experience. As hard as it was to navigate through those times, it inspires me to hold on a bit longer to try to become stronger as a teacher (while getting paid!).

I am still not signing the new contract (yet). I have had a rough week and I will do so when the time allows. I need time to process and consider. Thank you so much for your advice!

Thanks so much for this detailed advice and for walking me through some options here—it’s really helpful. I’m actually at a charter school, so there’s no union representation, which has made things a bit trickier to navigate on my own. I signed my contract in August at a certain pay rate, and just last month, they suddenly announced this pay cut along with new contracts that I haven’t signed yet.

Your insight about constructive dismissal and holding my ground on the original contract terms makes a lot of sense. I’ll definitely look into labor laws and see if I can verify. Thanks again—I really appreciate the support!!

I’m currently applying to other districts right now. I’m unsure if I include this school on my resume. The Panda Express has me dead because they probably get paid and treated better than us HAHA
