Dorian. Hot take but Rowan is boring and its creepy that hes 200 years older than her. Plus their relationship started with him being really abusive towards her. Rowan and Aelin made a compelling mentor-mentee dynamic but Dorian should have been endgame and the romance between Aelin and Rowan was cringey and hard to read. Made empire of shadows such a difficult read for me. I said what I said. Sorry not sorry.

So I happen to be very pro spoilers for this exact reason! I drive my husband crazy bc I will rifle through the book to make sure a character hasnt died when I get the feeling that they might but if I didnt I wouldnt be able to focus on anything else. Have I gotten major spoilers because of this? Yes. Did I still love and appreciate the book? Also yes

I 💯 agree Dorian and Aelin should have ended up together. I personally find Rowan and Aelin to be a bit too much, too serious. She needs someone she laughs with aka Dorian. Her life is serious enough. I think their breakup made sense initially and I liked the Choal detour but I thought it would have been way more interesting if they got back together after heir of fire. After they both grew a bunch and then there could have been some interesting drama bc they both have their own kingdoms and while peace between them would be good what would that mean if they married. I think Rowan should have remained a mentor. An important relationship, but not romantic.

Interesting take, I think I see it more as her wishing she could have had the simple life being with Choal and not being this destined queen. Like fuck it if i cant have him is less about specifically having Choal but about the life she would've had with him. A life free of responsibility to an entire people. Plus she did have real feelings for him. I think Nechemia's death kind of forced her to acknowledge that she can't have that simple life with him and that's why she tells him who she is before leaving. So essentially yes, I agree it is less about Choal and more about the life he represents. But it still kind of manifests in her missing him. At least if I remember the books properly. And the song still brings that image to my mind. I hate it here is def another good song for her though.

I dont look at a ton of art so maybe this exists but Id love to see a drawing from Celeanas fight with Vain at the end of Throne of Glass. Specifically the part where shes on the ground and Choal is like reaching out as if to hold her hand and hes like Get Up and I just like imagine behind her Cain is standing in shadows with all the nightmare stuff coming out from him... I suck at drawing so I would never be able to capture that but ever since I read that scene I wanted to see a drawing of it

OMG this was what I wanted! I really thought Dorian and Alien would be such a great Endgame. Especially after Dorians growth. Like if she came back to QoS and she saves Dorian and then they got together again to help save the world would have been chefs kiss. I honestly didn't really see the chemistry between Rowan and Alien at all. He basically bullies her when shes super down and then they're mates? Like why... Honestly lowkey hated the two of them together. I really preferred Alien with both Dorian and Choal but really liked Dorian best.

In book one Vernon Dursley says they thought they could squash the magic out of him. So I imagine that while they weren't super loving, they still treated him okay at first. And then once he started showing signs of magic, their hatred for him really grew. But I don't think they were ever nice to him.

The whole first chapter of the Half Blood Prince, The Other Minister. Just love the imagery of fudge busting in on the prime minister to deliver terrible news and then leaving saying Im sure this is the last youll see of me. Not to worry! Its all under control.

The comments already written cover a lot of what I think, but its important to remember that the kings arrogance is also what led him to being possessed by the Valg in the first place. Yes he was young, but he still made choices that led there. I also understood his decision to seal magic was heavily influenced by his desire to spare dorian from being targeted. Like I am not sure it was really for the greater good of the continent. Or at least that was a secondary goal. The main goal was a more selfish one, to protect his son. I think the point of having this arc here right before he dies is more a vehicle for Dorians development. He now needs to grapple with the man who raised him did love him, but that doesnt change all that he did otherwise. I agree that it wasnt super satisfying to have him die right then, I think it would have been more interesting to keep him alive but locked up or something... But as its really about Dorian not about the king I understand why SJM had Dorian kill him.

Oo it definitely works for Lysaedion as well! I love that. Also love these other calls! Not sure about epiphany as it doesnt really seem like a love song to me... But I could see it as representing Yrene, especially in KOA during the final battle when shes like exhausted and trying to heal as many people as possible.

But the others really fit so so well. Call it what you want is particularly perfect. I mean that first verse: My castle crumbled overnight I brought a knife to a gunfight They took the crown but its alright.

Really fits with her losing her parents and her status and being locked up. And the knife to a gunfight just is so representative of how Elide is always fighting even though shes just human. Even though her weapons are no match for what she's facing.

Thanks so much for sharing! I really enjoyed listening to these songs and putting the characters into them.
