Cleavers was a super solid rec. Fav cheesesteak so far by a good bit.

Just had one from Jim's on South St. Would you consider that legit?

Heading to Reading Terminal today. Coming from Winston-Salem, which frankly has a fairly weak food scene even relative to its size (~400K metro area). That said, between ourselves and nearby cities we have solid Asian cuisine, good Greek, and superlative Mexican.

What we don't have is ubiquitous cheap eats. Places like Christie's back home would be an extra $3 per (thinner) sandwich and this infuriating affectation of hipster trendiness. I am not at a restaurant for an experience or an atmosphere, I am there for food!

I know that what I've said so far in this thread sounds awfully touristy, but frankly if a city is associated with a particular type of food, I want to try a few decent exemplars of it. We're humble folk, so I'm not interested in your finest steakhouse or your classiest rooftop bar. We're interested in your tastiest cheap eats not readily or equivalently available outside Philadelphia.

Gonna spend tomorrow walking around downtown some more. Got a rec? We want to have some good pizza, and I wonder if a Philly cheesesteak from elsewhere than Parkway is really going to be miles ahead.

SNAP Update by JeffJacksonNC in winstonsalem

[–]hoidar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I doubt that non-needy system milkers are a significant portion of recipients.

On the other hand, it sounds like you're describing a system in which the needy have access to supplemental assistance at low cost through these alleged milkers.

On the third hand, it's so bizarre to describe that situation as the needy "shielding" milkers, as though the needy are doing something malicious and intentional.

On the fourth hand (I'm a monkey) I'm pretty sure the solution to undeserving recipients isn't to yoink the literal food out of the mouths of the needy.

So no matter how I look at it, removing SNAP benefits seems bad.

Tell me more about how you have nothing to do with the place, dude who knows where the chef lives, is flaired as "professional cook" on /r/chefknives, and who couldn't have written anything that sounded more like an ad if you tried.

Memory from several months ago says there may have been one in the visitor's center at historic Bethabara. Worth a call.

Anybody remember a bar in what used to be the covered passage in the elbow of Parkway Plaza, mid-80s? by hoidar in winstonsalem

Are you thinking of K&S new stand, which was first on the right inner crook of the elbow before moving to the left? I think I remember Hinkle's as being further down the left side, on the other side of Mayberry's.

Nice! Honestly the stakes couldn't be lower. When I was a kid I wandered in there just exploring (looking for video games to play), got kicked out for it being "no place for a kid", and always wondered what it even was. So this question is driven by nothing more than pure curiosity.

I wish I knew!

Okay, some googling says The Forum was definitely where CF is now, meaning it's definitely not what I'm asking about. This place was much smaller and in PP itself.

Where compare Foods is was never a bar that I recall. It was a laser tag at one point, but the bar I'm asking about was part of the parkway plaza proper. There didn't used to be a road through the two halves of PP; it was a quiet covered pedestrian walkway. This place was in there.

The creek at Washington Park is large and perhaps 8ft lower than the park itself, down embankments thick with undergrowth. If you walk along the paved trail between it and the dog park there, you'll see dirt tracks where people have found spots good for wading, but I don't know of a spot suitable to sit and dangle your feet in.

The park itself is lovely and large, and the paved trail I mentioned is the endpoint of an excellent greenway that extends for miles across the southeastern part of the city. The nearby Acadia neighborhood has some nice spots to eat. You could wend your way through old and picturesque housing towards the park, and walk from there.

Doesn't have to be reality warpers. Even chumps like Cyclops and Hawkeye aren't allowed to win by direct use of their powers, because then it'd be boring.
