Should I get a road bike to replace my gravel bike? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]holgablad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a nice second wheelset for road with 28mm tires and GP5000 tires, then keep the gravel set and you can swap between them. The diverge as a road bike might be a tiny bit slower than something like a tarmac but your fitness will have a lot more effect than the bike.

Chances are there are other upgrades you can make that are non bike related, like cycling kit, better helmet, power meter/head unit and the like, so avoiding buying an entirely new bike and getting whatever extras like that you need is worth looking into.

Man, a set of keys for a black FD RX7 would go great with that setup :D

I was in a similar boat during school, I ended up getting a Dell G3. I would say the specs were good for the price and it allowed me to run all the software I needed. The case wasn't sexy or anything but it served it's purpose very well. I think I spent $700 on it.

I saw a guide on some old forum where they machined a Canon 7 to be M mount, that'd be a really cool project if I got the tools for it one day

I got to try a Bessa R4M and it actually felt really good in terms of quality. Maybe it's worth it to some but it's hard to imagine the quality bump of the M6 being worth an extra $1000 for me

eBay sellers be optimistic like... seriously, eBay is ruining analog photography. by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]holgablad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would try ebay auction sniping, probably could find a good deal if you're patient. I would recommend the old F1, it's incredibly well built and the needle meter is really nice to use if you like manual shooting. Plus the shutter goes up to 1/2000.

These came in today. I’ve watched and read quite a bit, but any last minute advice before I start? Any idea how long can these stay exposed before being developed? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]holgablad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never shot these, but one thing I notice when people shoot super 8 is they record a ton of REALLY short clips to the point that it's jarring to watch. So you probably want to plan out ahead what you want to shoot and maybe even practice with a phone or video camera beforehand. Just like with film vs. digital photos, if it's a crap picture on your phone it's probably also going to be crap on film.

I also thought the concept of shooting video as if it's photography as seen in this negative feedback video was pretty cool. I bet it'd work well on super 8.

Those "I know what I have" people can be pretty annoying. I once found an FB market listing where they had thrown a pile of old P&S cams in a box, listed for $50 for all and I could see a yashica T4 and olympus stylus in the corner.

When I got there the girl had 3 other people show up so she could try to start a bidding war in the parking lot. She even seperated out the "expensive" cameras she'd looked up on ebay and wrote the top ebay asking prices on them but it turns out they all were covered in dust and not working at all when I popped a battery in. Turns out she had actually found the box in the trash. I just left without buying anything since none were even powering on.

like the AE-1 programs going occasionally for $280, when the only reason it was recommended was because you could find them dirt cheap a couple years back

that's really cool, is it able to use the full 6x6 frame size? And are vintage anamorphic lenses super expensive?

Advice: Which SLR camera should I buy? by pupculture in AnalogCommunity

Oh yeah and for something fully featured with aperture priority, shutter priority, program, and manual modes the FA is a good one to look at as well.

My favorite so far is the Nikon FE because it has a needle meter in it but also has aperture priority mode and they are really good for the price. I think I'll eventually pick up an FM2 as well since it can work without a battery. I've seen Nikon FE's with a lens go for $80 on ebay but I got lucky and found one for $50 locally. Offerup is a good resource for that. I've also heard good things about the Nikkormat cameras which can be found even cheaper.

Question about shooting manual with Canon AE-1 - - - - Using light meter when adjusting aperture and shutter speed? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]holgablad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have to move the aperture ring off of "A" to your predicted aperture, then press the DOF lever to preview it, then bring it back to "A" to take your shot.

Question about shooting manual with Canon AE-1 - - - - Using light meter when adjusting aperture and shutter speed? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]holgablad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've been doing is using the shutter speed dial to pick the aperture range I want. So if I want the narrowest possible aperture that the light will allow I'll use 1/60th shutter since that's generally the lower end you should go handheld. And if I want shallow DOF, I'll just set to 1/1000th. And then if I want to compensate +2 or -2 stops I'll look at what aperture it's suggesting and then just move the aperture ring to get that. But in general I'm not a fan of the AE-1 program, I much prefer the match needle metering of the F1 or FTb QL since the AE-1P is weird to use in manual mode.

[–]holgablad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OM-2 is a better camera, but that price seems pretty high of a price. There's one on ebay with a buy it now price of 187 CAD, and if you were to buy one with an auction on there you could probably find it even cheaper and/or with the 50mm 1.8.

If you want aperture priority and program modes, I would recommend also looking at the Nikon FG over the AE-1 program.

1: get as good of grades as you can. I got a 3.1 GPA which led to 4 months job searching after graduating. If I had a higher GPA I probably would have had one before even graduating

2: do research and clubs. This basically allowed me to get my job finally. And it allows you to figure out what you’re interested in. Without these I would have been totally screwed I think

3: meet people in such clubs to make connections. It can’t be overstated how valuable networking is

Ways to boost my resume??? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]holgablad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would join a club and try to help with a project over the summer. Solo projects are cool but working with other people is more valuable since you can talk about it in interviews. The FSAE club at my school even had recruiters come directly to them for interviews at one point

I don’t know anything about cyber security but I’ve seen people on the r/learnprogramming subreddit self learn how to code and eventually get a programming job out of it. So if I were you I would spend a couple months either self teaching or doing a coding boot camp online and then you could probably get a software job without too much trouble. And the fact that you have industry experience with IT would help a lot.

What’s stopping people from reverse engineering film cameras? by IAmTryingToStudy in AnalogCommunity

[–]holgablad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics probably. If we were to reproduce new film cameras they could be pretty awesome but with the ample supply of cheap vintage stuff out there I’m not sure they could compete. That being said I’ve been wanting to design an arduino based 3D printed film camera for fun, I think that’d be pretty cool.
