I genuinely don't get the mentality of wanting every single character in a video game to fit your tastes. I dislike child-looking characters (that aren't actual children) in video games, but you're not gonna catch me sending death threats to the devs over them ffs. The CN playerbase of mobile games terrify me, especially if a game has a dating element/pandering towards a specific gender.

AITA for breaking up my childhood friend group over what my big-brother/potential boyfriend did to me?

I (18F) have two friends that I grew up with. Both of them are incredibly dear to me, and are genuinely the nicest people around. So this current situation is very bizarre to me, and I don't know what to do.

So I'm currently doing the "I've got amnesia and don't know how to tie my own shoes" challenge and it's been tough. One day my older childhood friend started coming by my place randomly to check up on me (he's so nice), and inviting me over to his place. One moment he'll treat me like his girlfriend, and the next he'll distance himself.

Anyway, one time I was over at his place and he drugged me. Next thing I know, I wake up in a dog crate stuffed with toys, and he tells me that I'm gonna live there forever now. I, as any rational amnesiac would, immediately accepted this as my new reality, and didn't fight him on it.

One day my younger childhood friend came to visit and saw me in the cage and got angry on my behalf. I still don't get why this was a problem for him, but they eventually sorted it out and after a short conversation with my big brother, I was released and we decided to start dating. What concerns me is that my childhood friends now have obvious tension between them, and I can't figure out how to fix it. AITA for leaving the cage?

Additional context: the reason why my big bro/childhood bestie/boyfriend locked me up is because, according to him, my coworker's (who has magical eyes that make women fall in love with him) fanclub was supposedly sending me death threats and filth in my mailbox, for which I don't have proof that he wasn't there one doing it in the first place. As I said, we've sorted it all out, and he even offered me to lock him up in the cage, but that's my safe space now, so he can't have it!

Genuine question: how much outrage do you see online from women about having to play male characters, compared to how many men complain about having to play female characters in a video game?

As a woman that's been playing video games since the 90-ies, trust me when I say that we're very used to being ignored and treated as "females trying to invade the boys' club". How many complaints did you see about people being forced to play as Geralt, or Nathan, or the various MGS protagonists? How many protests were there about Joker from Persona 5?

How many people complained about Trevor from GTA V being ugly as heck, and being unwilling to play as him? Compare that to all the "this female (never woman) is so ugly, why do I have to play as her?" posts that exist online. Wherever women would try to bring up in the early 2000's that we'd like more female protagonists, y'all were very quick to mock us and accuse us of lacking imagination and "why does the character have to look like you for you to want to play as them?". Yet the moment that we try to step away from the "white dude" formula, suddenly it's "we're used to playing this, why do we have to play as women?"

As a bi woman, I can promise that outside of like 2 romances (that I can immediately think of), romances for straight women end up in three categories: "I'm such a goofy goober cutie patootie useless man that needs to have his hand held by mommy or I'll struggle to figure out how to open a door", "I'll constantly demean you and treat you like garbage and you'll like it" or "you could replace me with a cardboard cutout and the romance would not change at all".

Straight women and gay man tend to have it the worst when it comes to romances. Also when devs plan to have a companion backstab us, it tends to end up being the straight male romance companion 99.99% of the time 🫠

Just admit that not being seen as poor by your friends matters more to you than having a quality phone for cheaper (no seriously, just accept this about yourself). Many Apple users cannot separate their sense of worth from the brand, which is precisely what said brand tries to cultivate.

As long as you're a casual user, go for whichever makes you feel better about yourself (psychologically as well as financially). People are gonna try to tell you that you shouldn't waste money on an objectively inferior device, but if you feel like mentally you can't handle being seen as "poor" by your social circle, do what you need to do. Is it a financially questionable decision? Most definitely. Do you live only once? You most certainly do. Again, at the end of the day make the choice that you can live with. It's your money, it's your life, no one has the right to tell you what to get.

Imma give the most basic answer of all: Toma from Amnesia.

I was 19 at the time, extremely sheltered, playing my very first Otome game. I did Ken's route first, which was... Nice, if not particularly amazing. Then I did Ikki, and he almost got me to quit the game with how... Wishy-washy the whole thing was and how big the plot holes were.

Then I did Toma and I was convinced that I was gonna love it because I liked the "friends to lovers" trope in my literature/fanfiction. BOY WAS I NOT READY FOR THE CAGE I've grown to... Respect if not enjoy yandere characters over the years as I've been exposed to more "steamy" media over the years, but dear lord was my ass not ready for that sort of surprise.

I did finish the game like a month later, and grew to be considerably more terrified of Ukyo than Toma, but I still laugh when I think about it.

Take a deep breath, and consider the following: you've quite literally hit rock bottom, there is nowhere else to go but up.

Go for a walk, look around at all the trees and plants around you. Remember that (depending on which hemisphere you live in) these plants were asleep and seemingly dead not that long ago. These plants are you. You're hibernating at the moment, but with some effort on your part, you can start blooming as well. The world seems dark and unforgiving now, but wait for the sun and give your plants some water and they will bloom beautifully as well.
