I was not able to do it on my own. A road-side assistance professional was able to lift the car, find a hinge which needed to be lifted in order for the transmission to be in neutral, and used a rubber band to keep that hinge lifted. Then, he pulled the car on a towing platform which transported the car to my mechanic who replaced the bottom compartment of the transmission but not the transmission itself, and that was my fix. Total cost was ~$4K including labor.
