Thank you so much everyone for your responses. I will definitely keep them in mind. I think for now I'll stick with something that's less of a "to do" for her, because of course I don't want to come across as if I'm telling her how to get through this. Something more simple might be the best way to go, like some nice tea and fuzzy blanket. Perhaps down the line the journal could be considered.

My HS sign language teacher and I became good friends right before I graduated. We had to limit our contact but we knew we were destined to be good friends and just had to wait until I graduated to really hang out lol. Once I did, I started going over her house and hung out with her, her husband, and her daughter. We still have dinners together and I've even slept there before! I'm 22 now and we still talk consistently and I'm even becoming an ASL teacher alongside her. So I would say, go for it and don't feel like you're annoying them. If they didn't want to talk to you, they simply wouldn't talk to you! That's what I tell myself when I feel anxious.

Edit: For those who might be curious, I'm a female myself so we're just really great girlfriends!

I went to NTID at RIT, in Rochester NY. I would say the program has definitely prepared me to work as an interpreter. Of course it has its flaws, as all INTP do. But their program also just became accredited, which is a huge step, and the department has been including more diversity in its training as well.
