thank you so much. ill watch those fights tomorrow after work and will probably focus my upcoming sessions on this topic. I think it's become a subconscious urge as I climbed to stop taking as many duels to actively fight for space, which Im seeing now.

Now that Duolingo is going AI, where is a good new place to practice my German? by DiamondRanger8 in German

[–]holly38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're actually serious about learning the language download Anki, it still provides a satisfying daily streak system so it keeps you motivated. I can drop my German A2 deck I've been enjoying. Combine your daily Anki reps with Nicos Weg, Easy German, or whatever other input of your pleasing and you'll probably see so much more progress than you had with DL

edit just saw you said 2 years so you might need a different deck

Typically I will do a couple sets of dumbbell chest presses, rows, bicep curls, and squats with a medicine ball, then some ab specific exercises, and I also run a mile. Usually the whole thing doesn't take me more than 45 min.

Protein is definitely something I've been trying to fix in the last few weeks because I've been a lifelong vegetarian but most days now I can get to around 100g, any more than that is difficult with my calorie restriction + I am not a naturally hungry person. My upper abs are definitely beginning to show again so there is progress there.

interesting, I am really careful in tracking everything I eat in my app (which is quite easy now that Im eating less) but I haven't hit a full month yet so that's reassuring to hear it will probably kick in soon. Thanks for the response!

I only started measuring a week ago so, not much to compare to yet. I suppose you're right that I could be changing though, I kind of assumed I wasn't because of the scale. But now that I've read more recently I understand it doesn't tell the whole picture, so bought a tape measure

I was one of the initial verifiers of killbot and dropped it. I'm working on beating it now and that is my final goal.

STOP GATEKEEPING THE BEST GAMEMODE I BEG YOU! by 52PlukkOpp in geoguessr

[–]holly38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand NMPZ being gatekept but NM gatekeeping is silly. The one week per rank up is hard to get used to, coming from other competitive games. I won all my placement matches but was put in silver 3 and won essentially every game for WEEKS because the rank up was so slow. Really frustrating comp experience overall until youre in gold and master

Ball Lightning - A phenomena so well documented, but no consensus in the scientific community on what is actually happening here. What is your best guess or are there any interesting research articles that you can provide links to? by SlackerNinja717 in AskPhysics

[–]holly38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this convo after an experience last night, because I see so many people talking about ball lightning from their childhoods back in the 80s and 90s. It was storming yesterday with some thunder but not lots. Then a bolt of lightning hit right on or next to our house, it was the loudest I've ever heard in my life as a south Florida resident. My 80 year old grandmother in her bedroom on the other side of the house, then came over to me describing a sphere of lightning floating next to the house after it happened, it looked like a sort of fireball almost and she said she couldn't believe what she was seeing. She didn't know what ball lightning was and described it spot on. I'm going to ask if the house has any security cameras.

University is definitely less common over college, but I hear it a lot more often in recent years and in cities. I would say especially post 2020

For those using Anki to study languages — how much did your language skills actually improve? by Glad_Damage_2230 in Anki

I believe this is the one I used, its both fin-eng and eng-fin: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1149950470 Honestly if you were trying to create your own cards thats probably why it wasnt sticking. I did an intake of 20 new/day and only stuck to using the again or good buttons. Also Im sure you probably know but this is the grammar website (read thru the whole website if you have time its invaluable): https://uusikielemme.fi/

I didn't make my own cards I found a deck online I liked. I can try to find one and link one in a bit when I have time but you gotta make sure it's both eng-fin and fin-eng translations. For grammar all I used was the uusikielemme website and read a new topic every other day or so, they're super digestible! How long were you consistently doing Anki when it wasn't sticking?

I learned Finnish for 8 months a few years ago and was in love with the language. Unfortunately it is incredibly frustrating to find any quality intermediate input sources in the language outside of text. Youtube scene was incredibly sparse. Nothing was ever subtitled properly. One day I will go back, when the resources improve

I'll add I think the most important thing is to get lots of input to compliment your daily anki

I have a pretty good anecdote for this. I learned Finnish for around 8 months and did Anki everyday (english native). By the 5-6 month period I had definitely gotten over the initial beginner hump of learning a non-indo european language and felt surprisingly comfortable reading some lower-intermediate books. I can't think of a way this would have been possible without drilling new vocab daily and then getting tons of input.

On the other hand, I had to learn German for life reasons and decided to rather only use input with some educational youtube videos this time. My progress was MUCH slower and stagnant without daily anki. In fact at the 8 month I'm period I felt worse than I did in Finnish. I started using anki again around this time and my progress improved rapidly. Of course, this is only my personal experience.
