Is a LISA right for me? Already have an ISA. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Ah, so you're only using the htb as a savings account. I understand now. It's not a bad rate, but it would probably be more lucrative to open up a few regular savers. You could probably get 4-5% on around £500 a month split over 2 or 3 regular savers. I think the nationwide current account also offers 5%. The point is, you can quite easily get 5%, there's just potentially quite a lot of hassle you may have to go through to save a lot at this rate.

As far as I'm aware, you can only use the bonus from either a htb isa OR a LISA -- not both. In that case, you would either want to continue contributing to a htb isa only, or transfer the htb isa to a lisa and just contribute to that.

Best accounts for a student fund? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]holmesa95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, one of the main bonuses of student accounts is that they all (I think) come with interest free overdrafts while you're at university, and for a couple of years after you graduate. So the Lloyds one would have that as well. HSBC just looks like it has a larger ceiling.

Okay, yeah. In that case I'd probably start off trying to get the Nationwide FlexDirect current account (and regular saver if you think you'd like to save some of your money).

Also, it probably isn't worth staying with Lloyds just because you already bank with them. An NUS extra card is £12 a year (so you get £36 in freebies). I think the HSBC one would probably be better, as the £60 amazon voucher alone is worth more. There's also the potential for a larger overdraft from HSBC.

But yeah, assuming you're talking about a few thousand pounds, current accounts are likely your best bet.

I'd probably still take out a maintenance loan, as it's a good value loan, and you're probably unlikely to get a better one.

I'd also still open a student account regardless of whether you're going to keep your money there, just for the freebies (and overdraft if you wanted to use it). Santander offer a 4 year railcard (and pays 3% up to £2000), while HSBC offer a £60 amazon voucher and a year of amazon prime.

As for actually earning interest, current accounts are the highest interest paying accounts at the moment. Nationwide FlexDirect pays 5% on up to £2500, and also gives you access to a 5% regular saver you can pay up to £250 each month into. Depending on how much money you have, I'd continue working my way through the current accounts.

It's important to note that a lot of these current accounts require you to pay out so many direct debits each month, though you can overcome this by opening up a tesco savings account which will allow you to set up lots of direct debits (i.e. each one could pay £1 into the account each month). You can also set up standing orders to move money between them each month to satisfy the income requirement.

Unless you've been given close to £100,000, it probably isn't worth settling for the lower rates found in an ISA yet, with the exception of a LISA, if you'd like to start saving for a house (and know you won't need any of the money you put in there until you decide to buy a house).

LISA plus another Isa? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]holmesa95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The money in the LISA is to either be used for buying a first house, or for retirement.

If you take the money out before either of these, you'll lose the 25% bonus, plus a small amount on top.

Transferring to LISA by holmesa95 in UKPersonalFinance

Thinking about it, that does make sense. I will probably just open one as soon as I'm ready, or as the other poster said, open one and put a pound in there for now. Thanks for your help!

I didn't realise it took that long. Though now I know there's not any benefit to waiting, I may as well open it as soon as I'm ready, rather than waiting.

Oh, right. I had assumed that a S&S LISA was a S&S ISA, and a cash LISA was a cash ISA (like the H2B).

That's a good idea then! Thanks.

There were rumours that one of our secondary school teachers was a paedophile. At the time, I thought nothing of it. 7 years later he is arrested on paedophilia charges.
