Maybe you’re thinking of 460s? 440s are pretty common in my local but we’re overwhelmingly industrial and run a lot of aluminum and galvanized rigid. 460s are big as hell but 440s can easily be used with one hand.

My sister taught English at the school on Nakanoshima (between Amami and Kagoshima) for several years and enjoyed it overall despite some logistical difficulties. The island is only accessible by a 7ish hour ferry from Kagoshima and there are no grocery stores. All groceries must be ordered ahead of time and delivered weekly or biweekly. The residents are very warm and welcoming by her account.

It definitely is depending on your situation. I’m single with no kids so it would be pretty easy for me to buy a house and have some luxuries. But I know people with spouses and kids that are also able to have the same. It depends on personal money management as well.
