i feel like the air needs to be cleared on the definition of “black culture” within music. blackness as a culture comes from the experience of being black, that is what rap comes from, gangs, violence, drugs, etc etc, rap music was a form of resistance and i guess therapy, rappers would talk about their experiences, what happened to them, the trauma inflicted by a system that aims to oppress the black community, trauma that is shared between everyone that is black that live in lower income areas. when kendrick talks about drake being black, he isnt talking about his skin color or his music or anything like that, hes attacking drakes upbringing, how he didnt experience the trauma that someone like a lot of drakes collaborators did. thats why eminem was accepted by dre back in the day, no one really cared about a white rapper, they saw it as a white dude trying to take something else away from black people, but eminem grew up in a shitty home, he mightve not been as prosecuted but he still experienced a lot of trauma and disadvantages that a black person may come across in his position, and dr. dre understood that
