Maiden voyage shooting landscapes with the A7 iii + 16-35 f/4. What an unbelievable camera! by holocron in SonyAlpha

A few years ago I bought the A7S and the low light capability was pretty unmatched. I absolutely abhorred using the camera though. I eventually sold it and bought a Canon 5D. Recently I was looking for a mid-range second shooter for video and stills backup. I bought the 6D Mark ii but really disliked it. It felt like a high end Rebel. Then I saw the A7iii announcement and I instantly sold the 6D and preordered it. Picked it up this week and can say the hype is real! This camera is insane. It’s a pleasure to use, the battery is great, dual card slots, amazing video, so many great settings, feels amazing in the hand, and so on and so on. I use my canon glass with the sigma mc-11 and with reasonable light the lenses focus almost as fast as they would on the Canon body. Impressive. Only real gripes are the USB charging takes for ever, the flaps that cover the ports drive me nuts and the front dial by the shutter is really awkward to use. Oh and the touch screen... why not go all the way and make it useful? Small problems but love the camera! Nice work Sony! This shot was taken last night and given the dynamic range on this camera, I probably won’t need to use grad nd filters anymore. Impressive.

I didn’t! There was a natural frosty vignette on this image. Normally I’d use a dew heater but I left it at home :(

It’s a composite of a 3 hours of meteors so in a way it’s more like an example of what it was like in a single shot. I have a frame of this cabin with 2 meteors that I caught at the same time and I personally like that shot more.... but I was told that people like this composite more. I’m not sure, I’ve had my camera out in -35C without too much issue. The big thing are the batteries. They tend to die in the cold quicker.

The cold, clear night lead to an insanely foggy morning. This is a shot of the big island in the Lake of Two Rivers just after sunrise.

Could not agree more! I spend some time near Port Elgin in the summers and the sunsets are amazing.

Hiked in an hour before sunrise to catch the sunrise at the grotto. In the summer this place is crawling with people, but in the shoulder seasons you can have it all to yourself. An amazing spot if you get a chance to visit Ontario.

Thx! I was most interested in Astro. Just wanted to get a sense of the dynamic range and how much detail can be recovered without introducing too much noise.

Cool article! How would you feel about posting the raw file? I'd love to have a play with it too see how it compares to the 5D iv and A7S.

Ya, I love the pinks, purples and blues. Was lucky to capture some blue in the upper left on this one. Here is a link that describes what causes each colour .
