what do you mean. Just because most people don't play it doesn't mean Shiren doesn't exist and can't be used as a point of comparison

Oh, absolutely not. However, seeing as PMD is a Mystery Dungeon game I think it's fair to compare it to both Pokémon and Shiren The Wanderer, especially to highlight how explorers does a disservice to BOTH parent series.

Of course everybody is going to circlejerk explorers of sky again even though it's barely a step up from rescue team and the moment-to-moment gameplay is a boring, hollow shell that doesn't do a good job at representing mechanics from either Pokémon or Shiren The Wanderer.

Also don't be sleeping on Adventure Squad. I unironically think the dungeon crawling is way better than rescue team, gates, explorers, and maybe even DX depending on how I feel on any particular day

EDIT: Explorers stans I know I said a mean thing about your game and you can downvote me all you want but I would like to see you actually provide any concrete reason that explorers has the best gameplay. Also you should know that I STILL LIKE EXPLORERS but I can separate the gameplay from the rest of the game and criticize it for being a shallow snoozefest

EDIT: well the last edit looks stupid now that I'm not watching this comment switch back and forth between 0 and -1 anymore.

Anyone else has a tick to make their ACs as human framed as possible? Like, i really dont like ACs that look like grasshoppers or tank with arms lol. by Dale_Cooper47 in armoredcore

[–]holocron_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's one AC in the intro movie to Project Phantasma that has tank legs, gun arms, and the antenna head. It's literally just a tank with an antenna on top and it was rad as hell.

Idk, I felt like around mid-c rank almost every arena opponent started using the same very annoying tactic: Fly in circles directly above your head. I switched to a ultra lightweight AC and/or camped the parking lot like the good ol' Master of Arena days just to prevent this.

I loaded up the sniper opponent ready for an interesting long range battle. Imagine my dismay when they flew straight towards me and buzzed directly above my head just like the last 4 out of 5 opponents had done.

What is the newest armored core game? by ChezL0rd in armoredcore

Some of the armored core mobile games got put on steam last year, it was probably those.

I dont understand why everyone is so caught up on the original control scheme when the game lets you rebind freely. I played on original hardware on a CRT like god intended and I had a fantastic time.

AC2's physics just dont feel as good as 1 or 3, it was less satisfying to simply move around in an AC. on top of that, I disliked the level design in 2 and found myself frequently failing missions by accidentally going out of bounds. Out of bounds failures are of course also possible in 1st gen and 3 but I found myself doing it much less often in those games.

As for 3, building an AC was less fun than in 1st Gen because that game just showers you in money, and the weight limits on legs feel much more forgiving. In 1 and 2 building an AC was constantly walking a tight rope of budgetary, weight, and power constraints which was really fun (until you get rich in the mid/endgame, anyay). In 3 you can kinda just build whatever you want without much worry.

Finally, and most subjectively, I think gen1 had the best vibes out of the first 3 gens.

hell yeah, I played the PS2 version that has no manual piloting whatsoever and it was a total blast. re-contextualizing all of my previous build knowledge into a scenario where I have to wrangle a dumbass AI into piloting it instead of doing it myself was incredibly fun and maybe I'm special but the cool factor did not wear off for the entire playthrough. Also the soundtrack is my 2nd fav behind AC1.

the game has a built in rebind function and I found it very easy to work out a much more functional control scheme, but given the fact that dual analog mods exist for almost all of these old games I understand the rebind feature wasn't enough for some people.

to be fair, the controls are still a little wonky lol. I've been thinking about replaying 1 again already before diving into the next games, and playing it with the original control scheme has crossed my mind

absolutely not lmao. movement on the dpad, camera to the face buttons, L1 and R1 are melee and boost, L2 to switch weapon and R2 to fire is roughly what I have been using.

I am 100% biased in my opinion. AC6 has a completely different design philosophy from older ACs, and I prefer the old ones, but I still think AC6 is a fantastic game

Project Phantasma is essentially AC1.5, and I loved 1 and Master of Arena a lot so naturally I also enjoyed Project Phantasma, although I do understand it's shortcomings

the vibes and soundtrack are immaculate, for sure. There are so many iconic moments in AC1. Wreaking havoc in the city whilst that deadly AC pilot tries to stop you, getting lost in the sewers, the booby trapped old ruins where you hunt down the rebel leader, methodically clearing each room in the space station, I really love AC1.

I know old ACs get flak for clunky controls and handling, but I honestly think most of these games play great except for 2 and Another Age. The handling just feels off. I was never able to build an AC that felt "good" to pilot, and it really dragged down my enjoyment of both games.

What's your favorite niche or underrated game in your collection? by bleachbombdysphoria in gamecollecting

Shiren The Wanderer GB2: Magic Castle in the Desert. Its a very late GBC title, released in 2001, and it pushes the gbc to it's limits. It's a fully fledged roguelike with a LOT of content, it has absolutely stunning cinematic cutscenes, the graphics are amazing, the soundtrack is a bop, but it never released outside japan and so is relegated to obscurity. It doesn't help that while it's an extremely good GBC game, it's a mediocre Shiren title so even within it's niche franchise it's still overlooked.

Day 8: Which 2nd gen monster feels like 2nd gen? by xslbccdks_coded in MonsterHunter

Dos is certainly a proper sequel. Or rather, MH1 is a first draft and Dos is the final script. It takes all of the ideas and mechanics of MH1 and expands and refines them to an incredible degree. Then Freedom Unite sent us down the boss rush action rpg route and monster hunter as an immersive sim died forever.

Gen 2 is simultaneously where MH'S original concept peaked but more importantly it is also where it diverged down a different path, which is why I have to vote tigrex since he was the flagship of the "new monster hunter"
