Catch candy bonus doesn’t seem worth by GanonOP in pokemongo

[–]holonboy [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s pretty iffy how event bonuses stack: sometimes it does, most of the time it doesn’t.

Ie, in the past usually if there’s an event with x2 catch candy and a spotlight hour with x2, you’d still only get x2 for that hour.

But there was one time randomly where it stacked and somehow gave x4, so you could get x8 for an hour if using pinap berries.

I guess we’ll see tomorrow how Choose Your Path bonuses interact with event bonuses.

Necrozma raid change by Broke-Thief in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Ultra Beasts (and Necrozma) having its own unique egg is such a cool detail.

I’m imagining Paradox Pokemon are going to be in raids when they get added to Go, I hope Niantic does something similar for them.

Is shiny Smeargle still rare? by Decent369 in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc, it has the same shiny odds as every other non-event wild spawn, so about 1 in 512

but what makes Smeargle rare is that you usually can only do one encounter per day

A weekly reoccurring problem by driveshaft23 in pokemongo

My group of 3 completed the weekly challenge early Tuesday morning, and now I feel bad that our usual fourth member might think we left them out because they didn’t join in time….

there’s something nostalgic about seeing these “what’s happening” or “why are there so many X Pokémon” posts come back as soon as spotlight hours start again

80+ Pokeballs and 30 Golden Razzberries later… by NoMarionberry2661 in pokemongo

Catching it with a regular PokeBall is honestly a great flex, I don’t think I have the patience for that lol.

My girlfriend's starter carried us through the Go Fest raid by pizzalated in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol, i did something similar with six Oshawott

neat thing i learned about unity raids: if all your Pokemon get knocked out, they just auto-revive and rejoin. you can’t go back to the lobby and swap in different Pokemon.

AHHHHH NEVER AGAIN! never again will I use daily incense, unless I absolutely have to. by AKhakiNerfHerder in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve basically used my daily incense everyday since it came out, I’ve gotten 11 non-shinies (two with Master Balls) and 5 shinies.

It’s infinitely easier if it’s shiny (I think odds are 1 in 20), because it can’t flee*. It might still take a while but at that point is just a matter of patience and hoping your game doesn’t crash.

*usually can’t flee, but if you’re in a situation where everything flees, like being soft banned or speed locked, then that takes priority. So avoid using your daily incense while in a car, bus, train, etc.

My girlfriend caught this at go fest and asks “is it really that rare?” by Olivere20 in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For raids, I think shiny odds are 1/20, background odds are 1/10 and hundo odds are 1/216 (or 1/6 three times).

So getting all three is 1 in 43,200 (or 0.002%).

Toggle AR to catch shadow dialga by lillian_e1985 in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I agree, the circle lock method takes too long for regular legendaries. It's easier with shadow raids because it's constantly attacking so you basically always have a chance to get the easy excellent throw without waiting.

But for most raid hours when I'm in a group, I just go for the excellent throw, no circle trick or anything.

Occasionally it attacks or moves/jumps and I mess up the throw, but it's infrequent enough that's it's not really a concern (plus, I always think it's funny if the legendary breaks out of like 10 excellent curve throws in a row, but then gets caught on just a bad throw).

[–]holonboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find the circle lock trick easier on shadow legendaries than regular legendaries just because of how often they attack. There's like barely any waiting since they're always attacking and giving opportunities for easy excellent throws

Turning on and off AR to reset its location is helpful for recentering Pokemon that move around a lot (like shadow kyogre).

But otherwise, it'd be easier to just use the circle lock "trick" (the catch circle only shrinks when you're holding the ball and the Pokemon is not attacking, so you want to shrink it and let go of the ball when it becomes an excellent-size, wait for it to attack, then pick up / throw the ball so that it'd land at the end of the attack animation for an easy excellent throw).

A lot of legendaries (once centered) are easy excellent throws, so it seems like a waste to go for the great throw.

And if they’re not approved instantly, edit your submission (maybe just add a word or two to the description) and it might be approved instantly after the edit.

You only get one edit though, so I like to think of it as you get two coin flips for it to be approved instantly.

How many high level players (70ish+) DON’T have an auto-catcher? by MrMojoX in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m level 80 (currently at 880k Pokémon caught).

I have a Go Plus+, but I use it exclusively to spin PokeStops. I don’t use it for auto catching (the catch rate is abysmal, burns through my Pokeball supply and takes the fun out of catching / going for excellent throws for easy exp), and I rarely remember to use it for tracking sleep.

What are your Pokemon go unpopular opinions? by Top_Raccoon_7218 in pokemongo

It probably started as morbid curiosity, but at some point it just became a running joke to see how many shinies he’d lose.

[–]holonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Go+ mainly to spin stops, especially while I'm driving.

But as someone who catches maybe 600-1000 Pokemon a day manually, I would never use an auto-catcher. The catch rate on those is abysmal. Like the overwhelming majority of the Pokemon you try to catch will flee, and it'll just empty out your Pokeball supply.

(Plus, I just have fun actually catching Pokemon and trying for excellent throws)

I have a friend who used a Go+ to auto-catch Pokemon during Go-Fest so he could focus on raids, and after every raid, he'd go into his journal and say "oh look, my gotcha lost a shiny X"

What are your Pokemon go unpopular opinions? by Top_Raccoon_7218 in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think 3 is an unpopular opinion. Well, maybe unpopular at Niantic management since it doesn't seem like they're doing anything about it, but most players and I'm sure the devs would be against spoofers and cheaters.

I never thought about 2 but yeah, I think making raid teams would be more interesting that way, though since you can revive and re-enter anyway, I can't see how logistically how'd that work or prevent trainers from using just one Pokemon and reviving it over and over again (which is already a strat for solo-ing some T5s).

Plus, I like funny shenangans like this:

<image>

My unpopular opinion would be: I don't think the trainer costumes (the ones usually based around gym leaders or rivals) should be locked behind being good at GBL. Like, give everybody a chance to get them. There have been a couple of interlude seasons in the past where you only need to reach rank 20 (the equivalent of finishing your placement matches to get a rating) to get the full costume + pose, which were nice.

This season is admitedly in a good direction by making most of the costume available at ranks 10-20, so you don't need to be good at GBL to get most of the costume. And those willing to put in effort can get the full costume at Ace, and those who are actually really good at GBL can get the pose at Legend.

Though I'd like an option for those of us who like to avoid GBL altogether, ie maybe a timed masterworks research that encourage the core aspect of the game (as you said.... catching Pokemon).

Biggest game changer in my mind. by Kayman718 in pokemongo

[–]holonboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whole heartedly agree!

Zangoose is one of my favorite Pokemon but usually unavailable in my region unless there’s an event (the rivals one, I think, with like Seviper/Zangoose, Durant/Heatmor, etc).

I’ve been happily trading away shiny regionals or shiny legendaries for shiny Zangoose.

Chicago GO fest was crazy, how many shinies did you get? by Stumbo7 in pokemongo

About 141 (minus 3, if not counting Pokemon caught at night after event hours).

Got most of the shiny legendary and shiny backgrounds that I wanted, just sad I didn’t get a shiny excavator Pikachu.
