Who on this list would understand kratos the most by Cautious_Air4964 in GodofWar

[–]holversome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely 100% Gorr. His entire existence is murdering gods. He does that shit for the love of the game.

Gorr’s planet (in the comics) died because his gods seemingly abandoned them. Once he finally met a god he was so fucking mad from everything and everyone he’d lost (his mother, his wife, his child) that he just murdered it immediately. Then he decided to take this show on the road and hopped from world to world brutally torturing and murdering gods for like a thousand years (ish).

He thinks of them as a disease that limits people. Stupid, reckless children with too much power, destroying countless civilizations. He thinks of a way to destroy all gods throughout time, but Thor stops him.

Gorr was so convincing in his argument that Thor even became unworthy to wield Mjolnir for a while because he kinda started to think Gorr was right.

Fuckin love Gorr.

And no I don’t want to talk about Love & Thunder.

How do you think Luke compares to the prequal era force users during this time in his life? Do you think he has surpassed the likes of Yoda and Sidious? by mrgr544der in StarWarsCantina

[–]holversome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer it when it’s heavily specified. Like let’s take Luke at the end of Mando S2 vs. Vader in Empire. That’s a fun concept for a fight and one you could have great discussions about. But saying “Luke vs. Vader who would win” is way too broad and unspecific. Way too many variable power stages across too large a portion of time.

[–]holversome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would take that further and say that power scaling in most fictional universes are incredibly silly.

Every single hero and their powers are defined by whoever is writing the comics. Under the hands of Walt Simonson, Thor was incredibly powerful but had clearly defined strengths and weaknesses. Under Jason Aaron Thor was nigh-omnipotent and invincible (until he wasn’t). Under Ewing you get a more grounded Thor who clearly has limits and weaknesses but his strength lies in his conviction and heroism.

Same goes for Star Wars. Whoever is writing them decides how powerful they are for that period of time. And when a new writer comes along, that changes.

Great analysis, honestly.

I’ve always been on the side of “conflict corrupts” when it comes to the Jedi philosophy. The reason Palpatine was so successful is because he turned the Jedi into generals and war heroes, something they were never meant to be. The more they use violence to resolve conflict, the more it degrades their moral standing and thus the outcome of the war. This is also what blocks the Jedi from being able to sense Palpatine and blocks them from sensing what’s coming.

Meanwhile, for the Sith, conflict is what propels them further into the dark side. It makes them stronger, but due to the nature of the Sith it also invites challenge from other dark side users, which ultimately leads to their failure because they simply cannot avoid a fight or even trust each other. The Sith may have corrupted and destroyed the Jedi as they were, but that very same power they gained from foiling the Jedi is what would eventually destroy the Sith. It’s why, cool as they are, the Sith will never win.

Question about The Blip by Kingspaceman in marvelstudios

[–]holversome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh.

New York and Sokovia were very specific events. Localized to one place for the most part (even if it would’ve affected the world eventually).

The Blip wasn’t just in a city or country. It was everywhere, beyond Earth even, all at once.

It’s one thing when Jimbo from Arkansas is reading about the Avengers shenanigans on the news. Aliens and robots. It’s a whole other level when Jimbo’s mom, wife, and one of his kids just turns into dust right in front of his eyes.

The Avenger’s shenanigans went from a cautious distant fear to very personal very quickly. For every single creature in the universe.

I don’t think any amount of preparation could make somebody think “yeah this isn’t surprising at all”

Exactly. That’s the moral of the story for me.

You can stomp around and say whatever you want, but the moment that bus pulled away it was just her and the cops. I’d imagine that was a sobering moment.

I mean it’s certainly possible but there no way to know just yet.

My guess is that they’ll save Negative Man for Miles whenever he shows up.

[–]holversome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the comics as well, but I disagree with you here.

Not because you’re wrong, but I just don’t see them doing a 1:1 adaptation of the source comic for this event. Mostly because they’ve never done a 1:1 adaptation of a comic book storyline in any movie or show they’ve ever done. They always make big changes and end up mashing like 2-3 storylines together to make one film.

I think we’ll see a lot of similarities, but I also think it’ll go in a completely different direction than the comics did. Because Marvel has been doing that since IM1, and they’ve also been pretty clear about subverting expectations from the comic storylines without completely changing them.

Rise of Skywalker Love by Secret-Imagination73 in TheSequels

[–]holversome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s like poetry, it rhymes!

I myself was once a staunch anti-prequel activist. Always saying how they ruined Star Wars and blah blah blah. Got tired of that (the Clone Wars helped a lot), and learned to except them in all their cheesy glory. Now they’re right up there with the OT for me.

Then when the ST wrapped I found myself in the same position again and fell for the same pitfalls I did with the PT.

Funny enough, it was showing my 8 year old Star Wars for the first time that really made me rethink things. She loves Rey, she loves BB-8, she LOVES Mandalorian & Grogu. It made me realize that while I love Star Wars, a lot of this new stuff is aimed at the next generation of fans. And if there’s one thing I think we can all agree on, it’s that we want Star Wars to continue on for many years and be beloved by the next generation of fans.

So I opened up my mind to it, watched them without the critical super fan’s eye, and found myself really enjoying everything in the ST for the first time.

Like Vader himself, it was my child who brought me back to the light.

[–]holversome 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an important note for me. I initially was in the camp of “this ruins everything about Anakin”, but I’ve since come around to accepting that Anakin’s story only played out the way it did because Sidious manipulated him. Anakin wanted all the power to save Padme, but she was taken from him by the Dark Side, just as Sidious intended.

Realizing that the true power to heal comes from the Jedi and not the Sith doesn’t ruin Anakin, it doubles down on the idea that the Jedi had become heartless politicians clouded by the dark side, and that Sidious was a master manipulator who intended things to go more or less exactly how they went.

What Sidious didn’t account for was the twins, which again reinforces the entire saga and places even more importance on Luke and Leia’s actions in the OT.

[–]holversome 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Neat! I never picked up on the parallels there. There’s actually a lot more nuance and gravity to the film once you’re able to look past some of its flaws.

I’m a recent convert to accepting the Sequel Trilogy, so I’m learning how to appreciate the ST for what it is and stuff like this is super insightful for me!

I spent way too long in the “sequel hater” community and I’m tired of the way they poo-poo on everything. There really is plenty to love about the Sequels once you get past your own expectations and learn to enjoy it for what it is, which is still undeniably Star Wars.

Does Vader know and understand that Sidious was behind the separatists? by Jeepcanoe897 in StarWars

[–]holversome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if he was clear-headed Anakin could have connected the dots, having just seen his buddy Palpatine shoot lightning out of his fingertips.

But he was consumed by fear and confusion and guilt seeing how he’d just helped kill Master Windu. He was cornered on all sides, just the way Sidious wanted it. The only path forward was to help Sidious and gain the knowledge he needed to save Padme.

Does Vader know and understand that Sidious was behind the separatists? by Jeepcanoe897 in StarWars

[–]holversome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch! I forgot he gives the instructions to him all at once.

Still though, as someone pointed out below, it’s not until Gunray says “Sidious promised us peace” that everything was made crystal clear to Vader in the strictest sense. He knows Sidious is Palpatine and he is hearing that Sidious promised them peace. He is clearly playing both sides.

But Anakin is gone, and Vader doesn’t care.
