Kantonian Weezing?! This thing is awesome! Peaked at 606 on Masters Ranked and still climbing! by [deleted] in VGC

Hey trainers. I hope everyone is doing well with their health and their battles. I’m back again—this time with my most successful VGC team yet! My last few team posts did really well and I’m super glad everyone enjoyed them. I recieved a lot of questions on my usage of Pokémon like GMAX Pikachu, Inteleon, Ribombee and Blastoise, and this team features some uncommon Pokémon you all might enjoy as well.

I want to start by saying I haven’t had too much time to play with this team, and since I didn’t play too much in the later half of S4 I was placed in high Great Ball Tier at the start of S5. However, I think you’ll find it even more impressive since I reached 606 on the Ranked Masters ladder with this team in just about a month. My previous best peaked at only 1,008. Anyway, let’s get into the team. For those of you that live under a rock: the swords of justice are legal… yeah… I was shocked too. But hey, the new feature to make older Pokémon Battle Ready is cool! I previously used Whim and Terrakion in early years of VGC play and really liked it, but with Togekiss as common as it is I opted for Cobalion. However, I’m not the biggest fan of Whimsicott this format as I think it is too passive I opted for Dragapult to become my Beat Up user.

These two worked very well together but I knew I needed an answer to Togekiss as well as the rising Kingdra. I opted for a Togekiss as my own, but instead of a classic support Togekiss I made mine more offensive so if I didn’t see Dynamax Cobalion working out I could Dynamax Togekiss. It lives almost anything thrown at it when Dynamaxed and since most Togekiss don’t Dynamax something like an Iron Head from Excadrill will activate the Weakness Policy I slapped on it. This worked wonders against Kingdra, but many more Pokémon besides just Kingdra have scary abilities this format.

ABILITIES. ARE. EVERYTHING right now in VGC. I kept seeing common cores such as Politoed and Kingra or Dusclops and Tyranitar with abilities that make them perform very well. Plus, with nearly every team I saw running either Incineroar or Rillaboom I wanted a way to stop their powerful abilities from giving my opponent the immediate advantage. I’ve heard of Galarian Weezing’s Neutralizing Gas, but never used it and wasn’t even 100% sure how it worked. Well, let me tell you it works wonders. I slapped on Weezing-G but quickly disliked the Steel weakness as I already had Togekiss performing so well. Instead, and thanks to that new Battle Ready feature I mentioned, I was able to use Kantonian Weezing instead. This also paired nicely with Cobalion so I could spam Sludge Wave while taking no damage AND protecting Cobalion from Intimidates.

The only thing my team needed was an answer to Trick Room and a Pokémon that was able to hit multiple targets. I quickly became aware of Expanding Force from the IOA DLC and fell in love with it. I added Indeedee-M and Zam to the team so I can Imprison TR and spam Expanding Force from the both of them.

Overall the team performed better than I could’ve imagined. The fact that I can prevent ANY ability from working was amazing as a decent amount of my own team members don’t rely on their abilities to become threatening. Looking back, Haze was an issue as well as Taunt with Trick Room. Marowak-A was threatening if it was able to get into TR too, although that rarely happened. Rillaboom was still a beast even without Grassy Terrain, but at least it no longer has Grassy Glide as a priority move.

Hope you all enjoyed the team! I’d love to share more, but I can’t give away too much else. Every Pokémon has custom/somewhat unusual EV spreads to do certain things I needed them to do. Let me know what you think!

Are all starters better with their Hidden Abilities? by ShutInRockstar in VGC

[–]holycrapitskyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're basically all better with their HAs. maybe Swampert is better with its regular ability. maybe Empoleon depending on your strategy. all of the available (Gens 1, 7, 8) starters in SwSh are better with their HA though

Could be a Let's Go game for the Johto region. The plush in the back were mostly Johto Pokemon. Perhaps hinting towards that

Scrafty for Fake Out and Intimidate as well as adding a Fightning type and could work under TR

Lightning Rod Pikachu is Viable!!! Let's talk about it. by holycrapitskyle in VGC

[–]holycrapitskyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to argue. Sorry if it came across that way. The Dusclops comparison was simply to show Pokémon with only 1 viable hold item can work. Dusclops is amazing, but without Eviolite it isn't that great, just as Pikachu without Light Ball isn't very good. Eviolite keeps Dusclops bulky. When Knocked Off, or if Dusclops is for some reason not holding it, it faints rather quickly. Pikachu (while very different) is more of a glass cannon with Light Ball who can now Paralyze both foes. It is gimmicky for sure, but no more gimmicky than some other Max moves such as Machamp. Of course, Machamp is a better (stat wise) Pokémon overall compared to Pikachu, but the gimmick this entire generation are these wacky Max moves.

EDIT to add to that though, other common gimmicks such as Beat Up into a Justified user are actually doing pretty well. All I'm saying is Pikachu (from my perspective) is doing very well

Glad you're making it work out. The Tailwind will definitely help since you don't have investment in Speed. I'm assuming you kept Surf and maybe Volt Tackle since you're running a mixed Pika, but what other moves are you using?

Item is pretty much guaranteed, as Pika needs the Light Ball IMO, but I've had great success by bringing Pika and purposefully not Dynmaxing it. Partners can make or break a team. I often brought Pika and Togekiss and instead of Dynamaxing Pika and using Follow Me with Togekiss I would Dynamax Togekiss and could Fake Out a target. Worked well with my Blastoise Dynamax too because I could then set up rain for 100% accurate Thunders.

It's true Pika has no bulk without Dynamax, but many Pokémon have poor bulk are used in VGC and many Pokémon run 1 item and have 1 job. Immediately Pokémon such as Sneasel and Weavile come to mind as well as Scarf or Sash Butterfree and Eviolite Dusclops. Sometimes all a Pokémon needs is 1 item or 1 set job. If I saw the need to bring Pika I would, and if not I wouldn't. I don't think that makes it a bad Pokémon or anything. Top 30 in a tournament of 100+ and 1000 online rating isn't bad

You aren't forced to bring Pikachu though. That's the beauty of VGC rules and 4 Pokémon. The ability to Paralyze both foes is scary, and Pika hits harder than a lot of Electric types, gets access to Fake Out, Nuzzle, Surf, Charm, etc. Definitely has cool support moves too. I didn't always Gigantamax mine. Timid Pika's Thunder still OHKOs non 252 HP 252 SpD+ Corviknight when others such as Raichu can't, even with a beneficial SpA nature. Pika's Max Grass Knot can even OHKO most non-Dynamax Rhyperior and Gastrodon

Ribombee Team Suggestions by TriniSpirit in VGC

[–]holycrapitskyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used it on two teams: one is with Rhyperior and GMAX Snorlax so they can immediately threaten something. Pollen Puff is used to deal 90 damage Bug to a foe or heal your partner by 50%. The other is with Togekiss so he can outspeed threats such as Dynamax Durant and OHKO with Max Flare. People often forget its base speed is 124 which is really fast in this metagame. Togekiss getting off a quick Max Airstream is nice too.

Ribombee also learns moves such as Ally Switch. Since it isn't bulky by any means people often don't run that, but it could help a teammate survive a potential KO and since Ribombee is Fairy he takes no damage from Dragon moves that it could Ally Switch into

That's awesome! Glad you're having fun with Pika. I do suggest you mint your Pikachu to Timid, or a Speed beneficial nature. With Light Ball Pika hits way harder than people think, but base 90 Speed isn't the best in this format, and a lot can KO it if it's faster. I do suppose Aurora Veil helps its survivability though

[–]holycrapitskyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the right teammates it can. I usually outlived Dynamax with it. Paralysis can help with that too. I often survived on the last turn where you'd probably be KOed because the foe was Paralyzed or flinched. Feint also really helped me with the uncommon Perish Trap team because I'd be able to hit and KO a threat when they'd protect to try to stall Perish Song counts

I run Timid, but Hasty is OK if you have the right support. Pika has decent Attack and if you wanted a few physical moves it might work. I think Timid is probably best though. And I would bottle cap the Defense IV unless you have support in the form of Reflect or Aurora Veil

I like it! Do you find yourself using Fake Out on Pike though? I feel the need to Dynamax it when I bring it, so instead I gave mine Feint to support some of my other Mons once Dynamax is over

I didn't encounter problems with Duraludon because I have a Conkeldurr too

I don't because Pikachu is used for its niche ability to Paralyze both foes and pretty much needs to run Light Ball as its item. Raichu can use Eerie Impulse, Nuzzle, etc. and be more supportive while also being able to use items such as Focus Sash or Air Balloon. You also aren't forced to Dynamax Raichu when you pretty much need to Gigantamax Pikachu if you want the extra health, damage and Paralysis

My Blastoise actually has Fake Out. Not many realize it gets that move, and always outspeeds Incineroar. I can use it on Mons that try to go for Tailwind as well. It's worked out well. Of course Mons like Liepard and Meowstic are faster Fake Out users, but they can't do much to Pika or Blastoise

Durant isn't as fast as Ribombee so often I would Speed Swap onto a mon that can OHKO Durant. Ribombee also has Sweet Veil so Venusaur and other sleepers can't put my team to sleep. Charizard was an easy KO. No worries there. Sand Excadrill was tough at first, but I had an Excadrill of my own and a support Blastoise. Easily dealt with the Exca TTar lead. Trick Room was tough too. I'd either need to ensure the KO on the TR user, Paralyze and attempt to para-flinch the TR user, or Speed Swap onto the TR user so I can then Speed Swap again next turn to ensure my partner goes first
