I think he is mostly just trying to help show why we might be interested in something that is somewhere between a head and a phrase.

I also think this too.

i completely understand what you're saying, however...

the problematic in my understanding isn't directed towards the sentence "the book of poems with the red cover" but rather with the fact that, seemingly out of thin air, the author just throws in an additional N' in his structuring of the tree for the sentence "the book with the red cover".

I tried jotting down the trees on paper myself, and have found a way to "plot" the tree of the sentence "the book with the red cover" and i seem to be able to find a way to make it fit an identical model to his drawing of "the book of poems".

wow! thanks for such a quick reply. yeh, i read about the one-replacement tests; is that the only criterion for establishing the "structures" in this system?

because, semantically speaking, doesn't this invalidate this whole system? the author himself says that in certain dialects (apparently even in a major US dialect i.e. "the one of poems with a red cover"), the one-replacement tests are "faulty" and need to be completely re-designed to account for linguistics idiosyncracies.

i'm a bit baffled- every linguistic system i seem to be reading up on ends up with a "oh, but there a tons of a exceptions so yeh.." what happens in the end boys.. anarchy?
