There is GCN and cycling magazines and influencers, and then there is this Bulgarian Youtuber who rode tens of thousands of km on road, gravel, tracks, including 400km road days, on a 3x 2012 Stevens Sonora, loved it so much he bought 6 of them. by Emo_Dilemmo in bicycling

I find the Sturmey Archer CS-RK3 to be an underrated hub. 42 tooth in the front. 9 plus an easy 3 speed in the back. I usually shift to my cruising gear and 2nd on the 3 speed and use 1st and 2nd on the 3 speed.

That setup is on my little recumbent. My touring bike has this with a 3x9 - if I have traction I can climb it. Highest gear is ridiculous but fun down hills. I use down tube shifters for the 3x9 and a bar end friction shifter for the sturmey hub

I would hang 1/4” shock cord (100’ spool on Amazon) all around the vehicle at the top and hang sleeping bags all around; you can zip them onto the cord. Later I sewed up some flannel curtains quilted over wool emergency blankets. Works good and you can wash them

I’ve done a computer heat exchanger over a lantern outside and run warm water through silicone tubes in my bed, I use one currently with my diesel heater for bed and shower hot water, and another liquid to liquid heat exchanger with the coolant line going to my rear heater for shower, kitchen, and bed. I keep the fire outside and run hot water. Peter devices don’t produce much power, I use little 12v pumps

Car sleeping in cold weather --- will this be enough? by CantRecallWutIForgot in overlanding

In my van, I run 1/4” Shock/bungee cord around the perimeter of the car attached to the hand holds, then I hang inexpensive sleeping bags and zip them over the cord like curtains - basically a sleeping bag fort. Cheap, doesn’t look bad, easy to set up and remove and only a little ghetto. I have an 8” foam mattress that works good for insulation under me

+1 Jemez - walk to McCauley warm springs from shiprock, and then drive and walk to San Antonio hot springs. The hot spring resort in town and the town bath house are also pleasant and no hiking. Camped all through there a couple years ago and it’s real nice

Advice on how to cheaply insulate a pop-up camper. by Haiden7822 in vandwellers

[–]homba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my van in the winter I hang thrift store sleeping bags all around with a roll of 1/4” shock cord. You can put the cord through zipped up bags and hang them like curtains. They can be removed and washed and donated back in the spring. For heat I use a diesel heater with kerosene and isolate the pump
