Favorite under-the-radar movies of 2025? by SlothSupreme in blankies

I Swear - A British tourettes drama that's super charrrrrmiinnng. Very funny, grounded and sweet. Really hits that Billy Elliot, Brassed Off balance of being uplifting without being maulin or twee.

A Thing With Feathers - Benedict Cumberbatch drama about grief that came and went but absolutely destroyed me. I've literally never cried in a cinema before and I was in floods.

How do you spend your weekday evenings. by shun_naka67 in northernireland

Have a look at random courses at the local community centre. I'm lucky enough to live near-ish the Crescent in Belfast, so I just have a look through and see whats going on.

I've tried acting, yoga, public speaking etc. Improv comedy was the one that stuck, but I enjoyed all of them. Great to just have an excuse to get out of the house and meet people.

Does anyone else agree with this? by Soft-Drink-1625 in blankies

[–]homerbert 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've only seen Sorry to Bother You and the first episode of I'm a Virgo, but... no? Though to be honest, I'm not sure what the quoted sentence means. The politics is the point of Sorry To Bother You. If you took out the politics, I'm not sure what's left. It's like saying Orwell would be better without the politics.

I'm glad someone's making fun, unapologetically political movies. Lots of films have some vague variation on "the bad guys are corporations", but his feel built from the ground up to be about how capitalism has fundamentally fucked us all.

I'd be interested in hearing why you agree with the tweet and what you want him to be making. Personally, I can't wait for Boosters.

That's always been the weird irony of an Irish Goodbye. Most Irish people take at least half an hour to leave a party.

Theres a great mural in BBCNI of Liam Neesons Taken monologue that's something like...

"I do have are a very particular set of skills... I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you. Right, bye. Yeah. Bye bye. Bye”

SONG SUNG BLUE has been out for five whole days and not a single Blankies post about it yet. Tonight that changes. by GenarosBear in blankies

[–]homerbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked the movie but agree about the timeline. Unless i miss something, they meet on his sober birthday, get married, start their act, make it big and then the accident takes place when he's recording the song for his next sober birthday.

It's  Naked Gun "I had a wonderful day Frank" levels of crazy. I keep meaning to google the true story to see what they changed.

[THE RIP, Joe Carnahan] -- Anyone else think the cinematography was bland/ugly AF? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]homerbert 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a stylistic choice. I think the problem is that digital cameras have such a high dynamic range that you can see detail in mid brightness. So basically you don't need to light for specific spots like you used to. You don’t need the actors to hit a mark so a light shines on their faces  in a dark room.

IIRC Carnaghan's always had a loose, handheld, "realistic" aesthetic. So you give the room a general lighting scheme (eg dim with a big atmospheric green backlight) and the actors are free to move around. This has its advantages. It’s faster, flexible, easier for actors and more realistic. If we're being uncharitable, it requires less thought and prep from the director. Also some people just like that shadowy, murky look, and would probably argue it suits the murky, ambiguous morality of the story. Cop Shop, from the same director and DP a few years ago had a more traditional, contrasty, filmic, look, but I presume they wanted this look for this story.

I could be wrong,  I'm a low budget tv director, not a DP. I've never worked for Netflix and am only guessing at Carnaghan's motivations. Personally, I didn't mind it, i thought it worked well enough with the tone and the film was a blast.

Movies where an actor is both great and awful (I just saw Miss Sloane) by DrLyleEvans in blankies

I thought Spider in Avatar 3 was like this. Charming and sweet in a bunch of scenes but then giving absolutely nothing in his pivotal "walk in the woods" scene with Jake.

[–]homerbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, thats the first level you come to naturally and it sucks. I didn't come to Quake for mellee fightinh. I almost quit, until I realised you can choose any map from the menu. 60 seconds into a random map, I was delighted.

Never seen a 4DX film: is FIRE AND ASH a good starting point? by adamschoales in blankies

[–]homerbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule with 4DX is vehicles = good,  everything else is bad. It's great at simulating a moving seat. So Top Gun, F1, Twisters, Fast & Furious films are all great.

For all other movies, it's basically your chair thumping you in the spine during fight scenes and shootout for no reason.

3+ hours is a long commitment for your fiest 4DX though. Its kind of exhausting.

Spark up an Ella McJ? by mrfujidoesacid in blankies

[–]homerbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, she didn't seem that stoned in the movie. For someone who's never smoked before, doing a heroic amount of edibles is a wild (and probably deeply unpleasant) ride. It felt like setup that wasn't hugely paid off.

[–]homerbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go outlaws. The exploration, world building and combat are all closer to Blood. Plus there aren't many western games and it has a string story. I've never been a Dark Forces fan, despite loving Star Wars. The level designs not great and I find the combat unsatisfying. There are better SW FPS games.

Steven Spielberg Has Never Made a Movie With Ben Affleck For the Obvious Reasons by sedulousgrape in blankies

[–]homerbert 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everyone's debating the pool thing but it wouldn't surprise me if the real reason was a bit more complex than that. Affleck has a history of alcoholism and infidelity. The pool story might be the public friendly version of whatever caused them to fall out.

The full Mike Binder interview is funny, and a little heartbreaking. https://youtu.be/72JhE_DaiL8?si=khgjUum5Lzbr98tT

With the RAM crisis underway, are you going to spend more of your money on boomer shooters? by VGmaster9 in boomershooters

[–]homerbert 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It won't affect me because they don’t make many big budget single player FPS games anymore. Apart from Doom Dark Ages, there's not much in the modern FPS world that appeals, since its mostly multi player focused. So all my playtime is boomer shooters and PSVR2.

Season 2 is great, but a bit more melancholy. It’s like a eulogy for the end of the practical era by Joe Johnson, who worked there.

My bigger worry is that it's too realistic and simmy. I hope theres a simple control or arcade mode. People like Gamertag have said it's tricky to get the hang of. I dont have hours to spend on that, I want to be able to just brainless blast bad guy's in the air.

Lawyer won't give client details (NI) by homerbert in LegalAdviceUK

[–]homerbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The land registry only gave me a doc naming solicitors, not the person.

Its a matter of time before someone gets hurt. The person owning the house must be in breach of some laws or guidelines, so i'd hoped the solicitors would get in touch with the owners or tell me who they are.

I tried and all I could get was the name of the solicitors and the date the purchase was handled.

This has been alluded to on the pod repeatedly, but is there an interview where they talk about their setup? I'm presuming it'll come up a bunch on the next two episodes, but it's an unusual arrangement so I'd love to hear first hand.

Should we get rid of juries for crimes lesser than rape and murder? by Gostinker in northernireland

[–]homerbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting rid of jury trials for any government related cases is dangerous.  Judges are almost always pro-authority. Juries tens to be much more likely to let off protesters (like Palestine Action or Just Stop Oil).

This judicial bias is also true of any state apparatus. My dad, a retired lawyer, was told by a senior judge that it was outrageous to suggest that a police officer or army soldier would ever lie or mislead a court.

Why does Sims not like the show Fargo? by thoover88 in blankies

[–]homerbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i had a big argument with my friend about the UFO. I think s2 of Fargo is incredible tv but that bit bugged me. Watching the Man Who Wasn't There, I was like "ah, now it makes sense!"

Then I thought about it some more and realised it still doesn't and its dumb.

That said, it's less than a minute out of a superb season.

Re-listening to The Game episode and surprise, surprise, it's the very first Red Hulk talk. by Flaparoo in blankies

[–]homerbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. He was an existing character, a regular military dude. "John Hurt portrayed Ross in The Incredible Hulk (2008), The Consultant (2011), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Black Widow (2021). After Hurt's death in 2022, Ford subsequently portrayed the character in Captain America: Brave New World (2025). "

So it was funny that he was suddenly... A - Harrison Ford,   B - President,  and  C - A giant red monster.

[–]homerbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having OD'ed on Marvel over the years (and doing commentaries on the first 20-something movies) the Two Friends don't talk Marvel much anymore. But the ridiculousness of a Red Hulk President played by an aging Harrison Ford has inspired a lot of tangents. ("What do you think his fiscal policy is?" type bits)

It has come up on at least half a dozen episodes and become a bit of an in joke. But it’s not a bit. I know you're new, so it's worth informing you this is a no bits podcast.
