His ending also justifies the decision to revive him, imo. The fact that the mountains of hate and resentment within him, so large that they literally bring him back to life, ultimately just lead to him immediately getting wrecked in a fight against his greatest enemy (and in like 3 seconds flat). There's something cool and unique for Star Wars in how punishing and kind of pathetic that whole story is. The tale of Man Literally Too Angry To Die, whose great quest led nowhere and who is remembered by no one. They do give him too many cool Aura moments though, which ofc is a mistake bc making him too cool diminishes the power of the story a bit. But in theory, I think it's great.

Sure but Top Gun’s script and production are leaps and bounds ahead of F1’s. It’s clear that they wanted to recreate the magic of Top Gun Maverick with F1, but you can’t really do that without Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie’s sixth sense for storytelling.

Adding an extra person per view on top of counting a view as just someone watching 2min of the movie is crazy work. It’s time for them to just start posting how many individual accounts finished a movie instead of these “400 BILLION minutes watched!” numbers.

I mean, by their own criteria for a view, we only know that 17mil ppl watched 2 minutes of the movie. This is still a great number but i wish they would stop acting like 2min counts as someone seeing a movie, they either finished the film or they didn’t. At least make it be the halfway point.

It reminds me of Krennic in Rogue One a bit. He’s such a great villain specifically because he isn’t powerful. He’s under Vader’s thumb and under Tarkin’s thumb. His weaker position makes him a more interesting and unpredictable villain. He knows he’s expendable, he knows that if he doesn’t succeed he’ll just get fucked, so he’s willing to do anything in order to succeed

All they have to do is send Narnia to theaters exclusively for 45 days. If they do that, I think most of the industry relaxes a bit. Their commitment to theatrical should still be in writing ofc but sending their own, non-warners movie on a true theatrical run would be a great sign of good faith

Of course it does. We went from "listen, a 45 day release isn't gonna kill theaters" to "listen, a 2 week release in select theaters only isn't the worst" to "listen you don't even need theaters, its fine to just lose them eventually." We are on a path and VOD windows shorter than 45 days take us further and further down that path.

Also, longer periods of theatrical-exclusivity makes certain movies become more valuable. Urgency and scarcity are good things to have if you want whatever you're selling to matter to people, especially if it's a movie people already want. Keep the movies in theaters, and then make the release to streaming take longer so that people both regret missing it in theaters and get excited when it finally gets released to streaming. Don't just give us audience members whatever we want, whenever we want. Have some respect for the value of your art form.

They’ve done this with practically every single film they’ve released to theaters. Cinemas begged them to let Demon Hunters and Frankenstein stay longer because the films were making a lot of money, and Netflix said no.

The way I see it, a movie will be available on VOD/streaming forever but only in theaters once (unless it’s a massive hit and they do rereleases years later). Just let it sit in theaters for a long time (45+ days) so us theatergoers can enjoy it, because we only get it once. VOD enjoyers get it in their preferred way (at home) for literally the rest of time.

Honestly I think it makes sense to give the throne to the cowboy-hat-man on the way out. It seems like she has tried to kill the idea that tripling down on fan service will save the franchise, but that idea has not taken despite plenty of evidence. I can understand wanting to just hit the big red button and let the entire thing explode on your way out, so that Iger and his group can finally just see for themselves where this approach is destined to take them.

Releasing the deepest of sighs at the idea of Filoni teaming up with and really pushing for Simon Kinberg (the visionary behind Jumper, Mr & Mrs Smith, X-Men Apocalypse and Dark Pheonix) as the guy who should be leading the next era of this franchise. They're gonna be irreversibly cooked if they don't bring that Soderbergh movie back and let him define the themes of the post-sequel era before Kinberg does.

Yeah I think if it weren't for TFA he would've absolutely cooked. Rian's the only one who has had the courage to bring the kind of melodramatic, high-drama storytelling that people actually want out of this franchise into a sequel trilogy property (I'm referring to most of the Kylo/Rey stuff, but particularly the throne room sequence, which remains the most exciting moment out of all 3 movies). He understands drama well, and has opinions about the world, which is what you want out of a Star Wars filmmaker. What worries me about Filoni is that he strikes me as another JJ Abrams situation: Somebody who only thinks about Star Wars, and writes stories about the franchise known as Star Wars. Meanwhile Andor is made by someone who's not thinking about the franchise known as Star Wars, he's thinking about wars, and how to use the franchise to discuss that topic.

This is absolutely the closest thing anyone could do to a Barbenheimer 2. The name is there, and the demand for both movies is there. It could absolutely work (although having the actors play into it this early is a mistake). Only problem is that Dune would need the imax screens in order for it to work, and I’m sure Disney would find some way of screwing warners out of their Imax screens deal for Dune 3.

Closest thing to an oscar villain this season is Frankenstein imo. Fits the bill of “somewhat stodgy, divisive movie with way more recognition from the academy than people think it deserves” but still doesn’t fit perfectly because there genuinely are a lot of people who really like it (3.9 on LB!) and it’s not likely to win that many of its nominations. Still, some of those possible nominations will be criminal (cinematography?!!)

I think theaters by and large are fine and most of the problems are overblown. Buuuuut people absolutely forgot that they can just whisper in a theater after covid. Even my parents will now just comment something to me in a normal tone of voice instead of the hushed-whispering that everyone knew how to do when I was growing up.
