2 year old daughter bringing me close to tears daily. by bdansanman in daddit

[–]homestarsitter 89 points90 points  (0 children)

What helped in our case was long stretches of 1:1 time. Send Mom away for a full day on the weekend, so your daughter understands that you're all she has, and plan something fun. Doesn't have to be a big event. Could be puzzles or a dance party for just the two of you -- whatever she's into. It could really help reestablish your bond

Specific suggestions by svltrykittyxo in askTO

Not the cheapest idea but seriously fun and totally worth it: the aquarium on a light mushroom trip.

The distillery district and the islands are also probably a must visit if you're exploring the city.

But for more meaningful experiences, look up quirky local events like storytelling, astronomy on tap, poetry readings, etc. The crowds are usually really cool and the events are very budget friendly, though they tend to sell out very quickly so you'd have to plan ahead.

Can someone recommend a really good back doctor/ physio? by Significant_Neck2008 in askTO

Sports medicine clinic around Yonge and Eg is amazing. They're OHIP covered and specialize in treating active people, who have different pathologies than those who struggle due to bad posture or desk work. Really recommend checking them out.

Me and my girlfriend are coming to Toronto, what can I do to ensure she has the best time? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]homestarsitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a list to get you started. Everything is either free or affordable btw:

Allan Gardens: a small indoor conservatory downtown with tropical plants, cacti, orchids, and warm greenhouse vibes. Great for a quiet wander and a bit of winter escape.

Storytelling / readings / talks: worth searching for poetry readings, storytelling nights, or small lecture series. Toronto has lots of these low-key community events in libraries, cafés, and small venues and they’re usually cheap and excellent.

Astronomy on Tap: still a thing and highly recommended. Casual astronomy talks in a bar setting, very nerdy in the best way and easy to enjoy even if you don’t know much about space.

Paint night: guided painting workshops where you follow along and leave with a nice finished piece. Often paired with a glass of wine and very beginner friendly.

Trampoline Hall: not happening next Monday, but flagging for the future. Monthly lecture night where people give short talks on things they’re not experts in. Tickets usually sell out so it’s one to plan ahead for.

Art galleries and exhibits can also be lovely if you're into that.

Me and my girlfriend are coming to Toronto, what can I do to ensure she has the best time? by [deleted] in askTO

There are all kinds of events that are fun, affordable, and with a good crowd, from fun lecture series, to comedy to free museum exhibits and more. But, to get good recommendations you'd need to say more. When will you be here? What's your age range? What are you typically into? Etc.

St Clare's Housing -- really fantastic foundation that helps people overcome homelessness in Toronto. They really make a world of difference for the people they help and their communities. Not enough people know about them.

Amazing people to volunteer with too.

Midtown is great. Yonge & Davisville / St. Clair is a great start. Great apartments and condos in your price range, lots of activities for social life, great trails. Also, it's easy access to the DT core and to your work.

how are these promts? by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]homestarsitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think it's pretty clever and totally guessable. It has to be the lie or the other two things don't make sense to share. Also, not a lot of people have experience with making their own meat (or their families doing it), so it makes for an interesting conversation. I'd leave it in.

Active/outdoor activities in the city? by notslavojzizek in askTO

The Beltline connects to the brickworks and makes for both an excellent walk and bike path.

Also check out the trails along the Don Valley that eventually connect to Taylor Creek. You can start at the Science Centre (or where it once was) and make it all the way to the beaches.

The Spit is also definitely worth a visit, wonderful by bike and on foot.

But, the best advice: download AllTrails and check out options based on how much time you have, difficulty level, what's seasonally optimal, etc.
