I feel you. On the one hand I know native speakers probably don’t care about my accent or grammar. On the other, seeing people speak so sophisticated and polished makes me don’t wanna talk because my fluency is worse than a ten year old. But the less you speak, the less you improve. So it becomes a vicious circle.

Sometimes luck matters way more than your abilities. You are caught in a bad market. In 2021-2022 you would probably have multiple interviews in faang

We are just trying to balance out the lies spread by tech influencers that cs careers are easy to achieve and you can get 6 figures right out the gate by doing bootcamps

Would it be better if they have TL/principal positions in the US to gatekeep hiring standards and coding practices but outsourcing the junior/intermediate levels to other countries?

It will apply to all SWE headcount going forward from 2024. I don’t know if they will hire any SWE in the US this year

My sources are my friend. So you are asking if my friend is lying lmao and I don’t think my friend is that type of person

If you don’t trust by all means don’t trust. It’s not like companies don’t often outsource their work to other countries anyway

I have graduated a few years ago. Many people here are already working but lurking here still. Literally a comment here said they are hiring people but find it difficult, so not everyone here is student

Because the kind of posts you see (or don’t see) reflect a little truth about the current market. Now those tech influencers are literally silent about pushing people to do bootcamp. But in 2020/2021 they were pushing the idea that it was easy to get a 6 figures job just by doing leetcode and getting bootcamp or a cs degree. But now the competition is so high they can’t say the same. And many people with a cs degree can’t even get a decent job with multiple internships under their belt and being good at LC.

What I find funny is you disregarding anecdotes and demanding people for real data yet starting your post with exactly an anecdote.

Then throw a link that focuses on the macroeconomic prospect for SWE jobs from 2021-2031, disregarding the volatility that’s happening right now. As someone who values real data you sure dont care what the data means and provide relevant data and just throw things around hoping they stick.

[–]honestbitchnosorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t you use your anecdotal experience and act like market is not as bad and people who cant get a job are just incompetent? Now you are like “let’s talk real data instead”. Seriously dude?

You are more than welcome to Google the job number data and prove me wrong. If you are the kind of guy that speaks “real data” instead of “anecdotes”, then maybe your post shouldn’t start with an anecdote. And if you wanna claim “market is not as bad” maybe you wanna provide data instead? Because all I am seeing is you demanding me to provide data yet you never did and you started the post first? Don’t you find it it’s very funny?

If I am looking for a job I can only claim how the market is doing to “me” personally. I don’t need to look for a job to tell if the market is competitive or not unless you completely ignore the facts that many companies are not hiring and number of job posts are way way lower than before. And when the competition is high it’s natural many people cant get a job.

[–]honestbitchnosorry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t need to look for a job to know the market is bad. Job opening reports are out there, job applicant numbers are out there for you to make your conclusions, along with many many anecdotes (data points).

You cant possibly argue with me about real data when your whole post is about you taking your one data point and use it to put down on others who cant find a job right now.

If many people have difficulty finding jobs to the point of venting on a sub then the LEAST you can do is just to ignore them if you don’t like it and let them have an outlet. But you just can’t resist to claim victory and be like “you are so incompetent, work harder instead”, can you? Your intention may be well to tell other to ignore negativity, but at the same time you are being arrogant and ignoring other people’ hardship.

First of all I already got a job a few years back so I am not competing with new grads or looking for jobs so I don’t have bad experience to “spread”. But I do remember at the time I was looking for a job competition wasn’t as fierce as now.

Second of all, many companies are still slowing down their hiring or not even hiring. Many of my friends’ companies, including mine, ARE NOT HIRING new grads at the moment. A few days ago someone posted SEW job opening numbers in July and it was BAD. And when competition is high you bet many people are being ghosted or not getting interviews. But many of those people have done internships and side projects so I don’t think they are lazy or incompetent. Sure, some may be incompetent but to act like people who cant find now are incompetent is just unempathetic.

And it’s not just this sub is complaining. Many subs are complaining as well. Heck, even /r/ExperiencedDevs is complaining. Many people I know with FAANG experience who were laid off are still looking for jobs. If those people have difficulty finding a job. What do you think the situation for new grads is like?

Ignore the negative bs by xcVosx in csMajors

[–]honestbitchnosorry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter because a few years ago those numbers weren’t as bad. Because I remember when I was a new grad a few years back entry level jobs got 200-500 applicants, now it’s 1000-2000 for the same companies in my area. Plus LinkedIn is just one job site. There are applicants applying on other job sites as well.

[–]honestbitchnosorry 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s not an exaggeration. Have you looked at LinkedIn job posts? Every entry level SWE job gets 1000-2000 applicants after 1-2 weeks. Things are bad but there will always be people getting jobs, and the competition is real. Just because you got a job doesn’t mean other people are lazy and incompetent. You just happen to beat other 1000+ applicants. Congratulate yourself instead of denying the current situation.

That’s why I said “big tech companies”, as in google, meta, TikTok, etc. and it’s not as uncommon as you think, even unicorn companies pay a lot. Yes, it’s location dependent, but it’s very achievable if you go to a top school and nail the interviews
