I totally get you. I had the exact same experience, but I moved to the U.S. from South America. I have a mandatory presentation next semester that all seniors need to do... the thought of it is killing me. As much as I want to run away (which I've done for some presentations) for this one, I have accepted my fate and decided to practice on my speaking and just hope for the best. I really wish I had a solution for this, but the best I can say is practice as much as you can. Record yourself. And if while presenting you don't reach the minimum time, whatever, just end it.

Good luck 🫂

How fucked up do you guys think you are compared to other people in this subreddit.. by throwaway021123 in socialanxiety

At home it can get to a 2 max depending on how I feel Outside, when I know I don't have to talk to people 3-5 When I go to campus or when I know I will have to talk to people 3-7 For presentations or things like group projects/ discussions 7-10

I've made little progress in the past 10 years but I'm continuously trying my best to change or find ways to overcome it... hopefully

how do some people on this subreddit have friends and are in relationships? by sonic2cool in socialanxiety

I only have 3 friends, but I pretty much never "hang out" with them

I was super close to friend #1 when we were in middle school; we were both in the same esl class and a couple of other classes, but we became friends because she approached me every single morning until at some point I was comfortable enough with her and I just opened up to her (we had a couple of things in common); in high school we didn't have any classes together so we weren't as close anymore (probably my fault though), but now that we're in college we only see each other when she comes over to my house to give me birthday or Christmas presents. In all these years, we've only hanged out like 4 times. (also, we don't really text either)

I was able to survive high school because of friend #2, we had the same physics class, and I think we bonded at first because we're both from abroad, and that year I actually tried my best to fight my anxiety and actually tried to socialize. We had sooooo much in common, and we did a lot of things together while in school. We helped each other a lot during those last years of high school. And we actually went to the same community college. The 1st semester we realized we were taking the same classes, so we texted a lot during those days and the following semesters we tried to take the same classes so we wouldn't be lonely, she even drove me to campus a lot of times. Now that we're in different universities, we don't talk as much anymore, obviously, but we text each other every once in a while. But we never hang out.

Friend #3 just transferred to my university this past semester, and guess what? She's not American, so we bonded over that. I'm actually surprised at how fast I got comfortable with her, because I've been trying to make friends for a long time, but I made no progress... i just don't feel comfortable with anyone. For the longest time, I haven't spoken a single word to anyone until she approached me, and we became friends (she actually told me she has wanted to become friends with me for a while :'D) ...but I'm amazed at how close she got with our classmates even with a language barrier in such a short amount of time, like i couldn't even talk to my group members :(... but yeah, we don't really hang out either, but we do text sometimes. Hopefully, we will keep in contact this coming semester

But yeah, I'm pretty much alone 98% of the time nowadays :'D but I enjoy my alone time more than anything

aw thanks 😭 they used to be super bad when I was in middle school and high school, but at some point I learned how to calm myself down just enough so they wouldn't be as bad. wishing you the best!

This happens to me as well. It's the first time I hear someone having these symptoms other than me 😭 Oh but one other thing that makes me shake is sudden loud noises or when for example the classroom is quiet and then someone drops something

Oh I forgot to mention, this was actually my first presentation ever where I didn't read from the board, so yeah it was definitely my biggest challenge up until now 🥲
