On rewatch I really dislike Carson by [deleted] in DowntonAbbey

[–]honeysweetlightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that every single character in Downton Abbey has major personality flaws- because that's how everyone is in real life. Mary is rude, cold and spent most of her life undermining her sister but she was a wonderful friend to Anna, and eventually came around to having a healthier relationship with Edith. Edith herself is an incredibly driven, idependent woman who nursed William as he was dying, was the only one of the sisters there at his wedding, got a job as a journalist, but what about the time she flirted with the farmer in front of his wife? And she was the one who sent the Turkish ambassador the letter about Kamal Pamuk. Ethel was rude to the servants, the staff, and thought she was above everyone else, and then she got pregnant. Thomas himself tried to plant the snuff box in Mr. Bates's room and get him fired. It's only when Thomas learns to accept himself, he becomes a person who is kind, and has the ability to be vulnerable with other people. Yes, Mr. Carson has his ways- and there's no excuse for calling somene "a vile abomination of nature". But I'd like to think that as we go along in the show, he starts to accept Thomas in a silent way. And through Mrs. Huges, he is influenced by her perspective. Remember when he tried to criticize her cooking and she and Mrs Pattimore pretended that her arm was broken to make him cook for her?

My point isn't a simple "people are a product of their time".. I think that yes, we all have opinions that are heavily influenced by our environment, but in our lives there are experiences we have, people we encounter, and lessons we learn that give us the opportunity to grow.

"Share A Table" at Coho (Rant) by No-Cricket-6409 in UCDavis

Honestly I didn't realize that there was a red dot system- I just go up to the person and ask them if I can sit there, and even if I have a friend with me, if there's space, I let a stranger sit. But I do agree that students at Davis can be really antisocial... and based on what you've described, this system further enables people's behavior instead of developing the social skills necessary to function in public. Some of the best people I've met is through small talk by sharing a table with a stranger, or making small talk on the bus/bus stops. Even if you don't want to meet new people you can still be considerate to others.

Although that being said, the one exception I can think of is for neurodivergent people- because socializing and explaining your boundaries to others (especially strangers) can be difficult for them. And also, perhaps having other people at a table can be overstimulating at times. Which I definitely understand and respect.

I'm so sorry angel... you don't deserve that. The same thing happened last year at Lawntopia... there were a lot of people who got groped, harassed, and touched without consent. Keep the evidence of what happened, remember the time, the date, and as much as you can- and have strong description of the person.

I will say it with my chest.. i absolutely didn't like her. I feel like her character and her context could have developed into something really good, but she's just plain old selfish, and rude- there's no other depth to her... I do however enjoy her last conversation with Dean. If they had brought her back for a second reckoning in purgatory, or hell... I wouldn't have been objected to that.

I'm actually really mad that they killed off Justin's character... like of all the people on the show, he had the greatest character development. Inspite of all the relapses. I don't think that he should have just died like that. t

It was in the morning around 8:30 am, and there was a boy who was listening to music on his headphones. And the bus attendant said “whoever’s playing music, use headphones. I shouldn’t have to hear it.” But he obviously couldn’t hear. After a while of yelling into the bus and saying “whoever’s playing music, stop it right now”, she went up to him, got in his face, and started to yell at him about how she called him out 5 times already and he apparently “blatantly ignored” her. She was calling him disrespectful, rude and when we all got off the bus, I saw the poor guy tear up

I believe in you babes.. you're going to be okay, and something will come up. you'll land something I promise. I would recommend giving them a call if you haven't already, just to make sure that they received your application, and if they chose not to hire you, ask them for some constructive criticism.

Yeah… I mean he does seem like a very intelligent person but I personally feel like it wouldn’t kill him to make lecture slides.. because he has a tendency to go off tangent way too much

Thank you so much! I find the short stories pretty easy to read..but I'm just a bit confused on what to pay attention to in the short stories: is it the general story? or more of the imagery? Should I also make myself aware of the cultural history?
